Supernatural Just Proved That Dean And Castiel Really Need To Make Up
Spoilers ahead for Episode 7 of Supernatural Season 15, called "Last Call."
Supernatural took a couple weeks off in Season 15, only to return with an episode that proved Dean and Castiel really need to make up sooner rather than later. Dean spent most of "Last Call" dealing with a standalone case that involved a duet with guest star/surprise villain Christian Kane, while Castiel dealt with accidentally hurting Sam worse than ever when trying to probe the wound from when he shot God, which resulted in Sergei trying to coerce Cas into assisting him.
Castiel was unable to get Dean to pick up his phone when he believed Sam was dying, and while that was technically because Dean was busy with his own problems, there is no sign that the rift between them will get any smaller unless one of them makes some kind of grand move, or something happens to convince them that they need to bury the hatchet and complete Team Free Will again. Would Dean have answered Castiel's call, even if he had all the time in the world?
"Last Call" was a step in the right direction, as Castiel returned to try and help the Winchesters make their stand against God (whose plan for the Winchesters -- which just might work -- is absolutely devastating), and he and Dean had a brief conversation. They weren't exactly smothering each other with hugs or showing any of their old comradery or anything particularly hopeful, but they are physically closer than before. That's... good?
Unfortunately, fans shouldn't expect to see Dean and Cas back at their best as a duo by the next episode. Earlier in Season 15, Misha Collins spoke with CinemaBlend about the strained relationship between Dean and Cas, and his words don't suggest a miraculous reconciliation is in store without a twist. Here's how he put it then:
So, don't expect the next episode to break the tension between Dean and Castiel. That said, the next episode -- fittingly called "Our Father, Who Aren't In Heaven" in reference to God -- will be the fall finale of Supernatural Season 15, so it wouldn't be shocking if it ends on a game-changing cliffhanger.
If so, could it be what Dean and Cas need to put their relationship on the road to recovery? And don't longtime fans of their "profound bond" deserve some episodes with the guys back on good terms as friends and family when the end of the entire series is nigh?

Well, whatever happens next week, there will be some Winchester family drama thanks to the return of none other than Adam, a.k.a. the third Winchester brother who was stuck in Hell with Lucifer and Michael from the end of Season 5 to (presumably) when God opened the doors of Hell. Check out the promo for the Supernatural midseason finale:
See what happens when Adam returns to Supernatural in the midseason finale on Thursday, December 12 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW, and whether that will be enough to mend the bond between Dean and Castiel. Supernatural is getting a new time slot when it returns in 2020, and a whole lot of new and returning shows will hit the airwaves in the not-too-distant future.
