The Awesome Way Superstore Will Pay Tribute To Late Actress Linda Porter When Season 5 Returns
Superstore fans were saddened at the end of September when we found out that actress Linda Porter, who played Myrtle on the show since Season 1, had passed away. The cast and crew of the hit NBC sitcom were also taken by surprise when Porter died, and while the show paid tribute to her with a title card at the end of the episode following her death, there wasn't time to properly write her character out of the show that early in Season 5. Well, now that's about to change.
When Superstore returns from winter hiatus in January, fans will finally get an episode that writes Myrtle off and gives the sweet, but casually racist and sometimes quick to anger Cloud 9 employee her due. According to TV Line, the January 16 installment will feature her co-workers wrestling with her death "and the fact that she left a large sum of money to Jonah." Oh, this is going to be good!
As fans of Superstore will likely know, very few of Myrtle's co-workers managed to permanently endear themselves to the long-time Cloud 9 worker. And, Jonah was no different. While he could frequently be seen trying to help out the much older lady at work when she had moments of confusion, Myrtle was just as likely to give Jonah a dressing-down as anyone else she worked with. That's not the only thing that makes this plot line intriguing, either.
After Myrtle was fired in Season 3 (due to ageism, but also because her work was mostly "slow...and bad"), she showed up at the store as a customer and revealed that she was collecting cans as her new job and really hoping to win the lottery because she was living in a motel and running out of money. She was later seen eating ketchup packets at the store's coffee shop, and, after being rehired, told Dina she would need more hours to be able to pay for her medication so she wouldn't die.
So, the big question is: Just how did Myrtle get all this money that she's going to leave Jonah? Did she, in fact, manage to win the lottery but kept working just in case? Did Myrtle have money all along? Was she able to sock enough away from her 25 plus years at Cloud 9 to have a nice nest egg, but lived like a pauper so that she didn't have to touch it? I'm sure that this reveal will bring up a lot of questions for Amy, Jonah, Dina, Garrett, Cheyenne and the rest of the Could 9 crew.
The last episode of Superstore this year comes on December 12 at a special time, 9 p.m. EST, while the wacky workplace comedy will return in the new year on January 9 at 8 p.m. EST.
