Better Call Saul has officially revealed some good news and some bad news for fans. The show has been renewed by AMC for a sixth season, with the big news coming after the show has been off the air for more than a year. Sadly, however, the sixth season will be the last for the Breaking Bad prequel. Still, there's a lot to look forward to before the final credits roll.
The long-awaited and potentially mind-blowing fifth season hasn't even premiered yet, with the first episode hitting the airwaves on February 23. The sixth season will go into production later in 2020, to air in 2021. So, at least there probably won't be as long a hiatus as between Season 4 and Season 5! The sixth and final season will run for 13 episodes, which is three longer than the upcoming fifth.
According to Better Call Saul showrunner and executive producer Peter Gould, the renewal will enable his dream to "come true," saying this:
From day one of Better Call Saul my dream was to tell the complete story of our complicated and compromised hero, Jimmy McGill – now AMC and Sony are making that dream come true. We couldn’t be more grateful to the fans and critics who are making this journey possible. Next month we start work on the sixth and final season — we’re going to do our damnedest to stick the landing.
Well, Peter Gould's dream of telling the complete story of Jimmy McGill's transformation into the Saul Goodman who will help Jesse and Walt in Breaking Bad is coming true, but what does that story mean for the Better Call Saul characters who don't appear in Breaking Bad? Specifically, what does that mean for Kim, and the relationship with Jimmy?
Kim's importance to Jimmy even as he moved further and further from the straight and narrow in becoming Saul Goodman has naturally led fans to worry about her fate by the end of Better Call Saul.
If Better Call Saul follows in Breaking Bad's footsteps with regard to killing off characters, only those who appeared in the franchise's original series are safe, and it's very much time to worry about Kim, and whether her death could be what pushes Jimmy all the way into becoming Saul, as Bob Odenkirk suggested. Will she die?
Hopefully not. If any writing team can find a way to write out Kim and others without killing her off, it's the Better Call Saul team. We can only hope for the best. For now, Season 5 fast approaches. The ten episodes of Season 5 will follow Jimmy's decision to practice law as "Saul Goodman," even though Breaking Bad fans know that Jimmy still isn't the Saul who will meet Walt and Jesse, creates major changes that he didn't necessarily see coming for those in his life.
Better Call Saul Season 5 kicks off with a two-night event in this winter premiere season on Sunday, February 23 at 10 p.m. ET and Monday, February 24 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC. Be sure to tune in to see the beginning of the penultimate season of the series.
