Patrick Stewart Really Wants Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan To Be On Star Trek: Picard
Just one day ahead of the premiere of Star Trek: Picard on CBS All Access, Patrick Stewart is already hard at work for Season 2. Stewart appeared on The View to promote Jean-Luc Picard's next TV adventure, and to ask a very important question of an old friend he once shared the screen with in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Stewart really wants Whoopi Goldberg to reprise her role as Guinan, and surprised her with an invitation to join the series in Season 2.
As seen in the video below, this offer is not just coming from Patrick Stewart, who explained the "formal invitation" was also extended by executive producer Alex Kurtzman, the mastermind behind Star Trek's television endeavors. Kurtzman also wants to see Whoopi Goldberg back in the Star Trek universe, and her reaction is priceless, indicating fans may very well be seeing Guinan back in the franchise soon enough.
As a Star Trek: The Next Generation fan, it's a little hard to watch that moment between Patrick Stewart and Whoopi Goldberg and not get emotional. The View co-host has already said in the past that she loved doing the show, so her answer makes a lot of sense. To be asked back certainly looked like it meant a lot to her, and Stewart himself appeared over the moon that she accepted.
The idea of seeing Guinan in Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard is exciting, since Whoopi Goldberg's character was well-loved and mysterious. At first glance, Guinan may have just looked like a civilian bartender aboard the Enterprise, but her El-Aurian species can live for centuries on end. Guinan was shown to have many skills that surprised crew members, though the most surprising thing audiences may remember was that the all-powerful Q was actually afraid of her.
Perhaps Star Trek: Picard Season 2 will showcase some of Quinan's unknown abilities that Q feared. It's also possible Picard may seek out Guinan for some special council, which was often the case in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Whatever Alex Kurtzman and crew find for Whoopi Goldberg, it will hopefully be great, and will give longtime Trek another nostalgic tie to that beloved show.
Whoopi Goldberg is not the first former Star Trek alumni to be asked about joining Star Trek: Picard for Season 2. The CBS All Access series has also reached out to Star Trek: Voyager actor Robert Picardo, who revealed he was in talks to join the series before Season 2 was officially announced. It looks like Picard has no intention of pumping the brakes on cameos following Season 1, which has already confirmed many familiar faces already on the way. Goldberg would be a big get if it really happens, and one has to wonder who else the producers have talked to if she’s set to return.
Star Trek: Picard airs on CBS All Access Thursdays at 3:01 a.m. ET. Stick with CinemaBlend for more on the world of Star Trek, and for the latest news happening in movies and television.
