If The 49ers Win Super Bowl 2020, The Simpsons Kinda Predicted It In 1999
The Simpsons has long been known for its clairvoyance, so it's no surprise there's chatter that it may have predicted the winner of Super Bowl LIV. Granted, the connection this year is a little less spot on than past references, though there is direct mention of a Super Bowl in "Sunday, Cruddy Sunday." The Season 10 episode featured Homer and the men from Springfield taking a trip to Miami for the Super Bowl, and a team that's uniform strongly resembled the San Francisco 49ers.
Miami is the location for this year's Super Bowl, but it also was for Super Bowl XXXIII, which is what The Simpsons episode was created for. The San Francisco 49ers weren't actually in the Super Bowl that year, but the episode had to be completed before it was revealed the match-up would be between the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons. Though The Simpsons didn't have time to animate the correct jerseys on players, there was a gag in the episode in which Homer and Moe's dubbed in the names of the actual teams participating.
The team dressed like the San Francisco 49ers ended up winning in the episode, which could be good luck for the 49ers ahead of the game. Again, though, The Simpsons never referred to the 49ers by name, and it's also worth mentioning the 49ers will be wearing the white and gold variant of its jerseys for Super Bowl LIV. With the jerseys not matching, this could be The Simpsons predicting another Super Bowl the 49ers have yet to appear in.
For any Kansas City Chiefs fans shaken up by this potential prediction, it's worth noting The Simpsons had another moment in this episode that could've been the future but ended up being false. Al Gore can be seen measuring windows in the Oval Office while then-President Bill Clinton is on the phone with Homer following the game. The joke was meant to imply Gore was the next to take office as president, but of course he ended up losing to former President George W. Bush.
The point being, The Simpsons makes a lot of predictions, but we often only notice when it's right. This is similar to the Lady Gaga halftime show prediction buzzed about a few years ago, which only vaguely resembled Gaga's performance at the Super Bowl. It's still cool, but perhaps not quite as startling a prediction as some of the things the show has guessed in the past. Of course, if some randos end up crashing the 49ers locker room after the game, that will bump up this prediction's wow factor immensely.
The Simpsons won't air on Fox following Super Bowl LIV as Season 3 of The Masked Singer is set to follow the game. Be sure to stick with CinemaBlend during and after the big game for all the latest news happening in the world of television and movies.
