The Flash had an exorcism of sorts in its latest adventure, and the act may have a momentous impact on The CW series going forward. Eobard Thawne was expelled from the body of Nash Wells, and his essence dissipated into the atmosphere. Barry and Cisco confirmed the act didn't kill Reverse-Flash, but what exactly does this mean for actor Tom Cavanagh going forward?
If The Flash episode is to be believed, what just happened could mean the death off Wells Thawne. Thawne was actually never one of the Wells to begin with, but had enough of a connection through his time posing as Harrison Wells that he was able to invade the brainwaves of Nash Wells. It was there that he lay dormant alongside the minds of every other Wells The Flash has seen so far, who were also played by Tom Cavanagh.
Those Wells are confirmed to be dead, and Eobard Thawne has been expelled from Nash Wells. Barry and Cisco were certain Reverse-Flash wasn't gone for good, and mentioned his negative tachyons would be in search of another body before too long. The moment seemed like a huge hint by The Flash that the next time Thawne appears, he'll have a different face.
The Flash sneakily killed off a bunch characters played by Tom Cavanagh, and may have set the stage for a recasting for Reverse-Flash. At first take, it appears that Tom Cavanagh may have fewer characters to play going forward, though only time will tell if that's the case. Nash Wells still has to deal with every living Wells appearing in his mind, so it's possible Wells The Gray and the rest of the bunch will appear to Nash when he's with Team Flash.
Plus, as I mentioned earlier, Reverse-Flash has never actually been a Wells. Eobard Thawne changed his own face to look like Earth 1's Harrison Wells, and later reverted back to his original face played by Matt Letscher. Letscher portrayed Reverse-Flash for a hot minute on The Flash and for a stint on DC's Legends of Tomorrow, but eventually Tom Cavanagh reprised his role as the villain. The reason, as heard in the crossover "Crisis on Earth-X" was simply because Thawne liked that face better.
So while Eobard Thawne may take another body to take another shot at Team Flash, it doesn't guarantee he'll keep that face forever. Whoever portrays him next will always have the ability to return with Tom Cavanagh's face, provided the actor is ready and willing to take on the role. Of course, now that The Flash has killed a bunch of his roles, is it possible he could be eyeing an exit from the series?
