The Masked Singer Has Let The Frog Coast For Far Too Long
Warning! The following contains spoilers for The Masked Singer Season 3 Episode 13. Read at your own risk!
The Masked Singer is officially down to its Final 5, and it's fair to say the contestants remaining make up the most controversial lineup the series has seen to date. That's my opinion, anyway, especially after seeing the Astronaut go home over a contestant who has been coasting far too much as of late: the Frog. It was fine at first, but after the latest performance, it's time for him to go.
Don't get me wrong. I'm familiar with the fact that The Masked Singer audience tends to vote with the most entertaining performance rather than the most talented singer, but this was just wrong. Hunter Hayes, a contemporary successful country star was sent home over the Frog, who recited the words of an Imagine Dragons song while moon walking. That may sound like an exaggeration, but as the video below shows, it's not.
What little singing that did occur in this performance was done by a backing track while Frog talked over it. To be completely fair, the rap in the middle was solid but, like I said with White Tiger during his improbable run in Season 3, not singing. The show might as well be called "The Masked Performer" at this point if contestants will get advanced for exceptional stage presence over actual singing talent.
Frog is getting some extra heat from me because Season 3 has already let go of so many high-profile singers. Frog is getting a little more flak from fans because he's the only non-singer left, though I'd wager he won't last beyond the next episode with the talent that remains. If he does somehow survive another round, expect the heat on his character to go nuclear. Honestly, unless the producers do another judges' elimination, I could see the Frog getting sympathy while more talented competitors split votes resulting in one of their eliminations.
With all of that said, if the Frog is who I think it is, I can't blame him for sticking with what he does. Bow Wow is known as a rapper, not a singer, so there's no sense in trying to step out of your comfort zone if you're in it to win it. Then again, breaking from the mold is exactly what won T-Pain the competition in The Masked Singer Season 1. Rappers can sing, though perhaps if Bow Wow could, he would've done so by now.
The Masked Singer Season 3 is rolling on at Fox Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET. Continue to stick with CinemaBlend for updates on the competition as the rest of the season plays out, and for all the latest and greatest news happening in television and movies in 2020 and beyond.
