Chris Evans has been lighting up the big screen for years now, whether it be in blockbusters like the Avengers films or smaller-scale features like Knives Out. But now, the A-list star is turning his attention toward some projects for the small screen, his latest being Apple TV+’s Defending Jacob. So why did Evans decide to make the jump from film to TV? Well, according to the actor, it was the amount of unique storytelling opportunities that drew him to the medium, and this idea was only solidified after he met with the minds behind Defending Jacob:
In my eyes, I feel like even 20 years ago the lines between them may have been a bit more clearly drawn. These days, a lot of really wonderful risk-taking and unbelievable storytelling is happening in the TV world, now that streaming is ubiquitous as well. And really, it was just about meeting with Mark [Bomback] and Morten Tyldum. You know, you take a little bit of a leap of faith. They only show you the pilot. So you don’t know where it’s going to go. But eventually you just kind of say 'I want to work with these people.'
Chris Evans’ recent comments to Deadline are understandable, as this current Golden Age of Television has led to the creation of more than a few acclaimed television shows. TV adaptations based on literary works like Defending Jacob have become particularly prevalent over the past several years.
Chris Evans is far from the only movie actor to find a place for himself in the television world. Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali has delivered top-notch performances in shows like True Detective and Ramy. Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon has not only had starring roles in projects like Big Little Lies and The Morning Show, but she’s also worked behind the scenes as a producer on the projects.
One can imagine that Chris Evans has had no problem doing mostly films for the bulk of his career, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he needed a change of scenery. It’s easy to fall into a rut and, for actors, that can certainly be the case when choosing projects.
Luckily for Evans, his role in Defending Jacob seems to mostly be paying off. The miniseries has not only received mostly positive reviews, but it’s also become one of the most popular shows on the young Apple TV+ streaming service. Evans even got to work behind the scenes as an executive producer. The actor has also received praise for his role as Andy Barber and could score some awards recognition.
What Chris Evans has planned next is currently unknown but, at this point, the world appears to be his oyster. And fans will undoubtedly be waiting to see whatever he decides to do next.
