It’s been almost a week since Naya Rivera’s body was recovered from Lake Piru and more than a week since she first went missing in the lake’s turbulent waters, but hearts are still breaking over the news. In fact, Rivera’s ex-fiance Big Sean finally opened up about the death of his former fiancé, sharing a heartfelt post that touched on Naya, their relationship and all of those mourning the Glee star after her death.
In a post over on Instagram, the “My Last” rapper wrote that he feels Naya Rivera is truly a hero, following the report the Glee actress likely used her last ounces of energy to get her young son back onto the boat they had rented. But Big Sean says that was true to Naya’s nature in general, noting,
Rest In Peace Naya, God Bless your Soul! Thank you for blessing us all with your talent and presence. you are a hero! Not just because of how you saved your son, also because of the barriers you knocked down for so many people to make them feel confident in themselves and to stand tall and be proud when they couldn’t achieve that on their own.
Big Sean hadn’t spoken out initially after Naya Rivera went missing, but given the timing of what came about regarding Rivera’s disappearance, him choosing to comment now makes sense. When Naya went missing, she was presumed dead by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, but with no confirmation, it may have felt insensitive to pay tribute to the former Glee star until confirmation had come through. Thankfully, her body was eventually found in Lake Piru, which will hopefully give her family and friends closure to move on, Big Sean included.
Big Sean’s had several high-profile romances, including dating Naya Rivera back in 2013 as well as dating Ariana Grande and Jhené Aiko. The rapper also touched on their seemingly turbulent relationship, noting that bygones have been bygones. It was Rivera he had previously been engaged to at the height of her Glee fame in 2013, but even though people may sometimes not be a good fit as a couple, their lives are affected indubitably by the time they spent together.
I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better person. I’m still grieving and in shock, I can’t believe this is real. I’m praying for you and your family and I know you’re watching over them and protecting them.
Big Sean isn’t the only Hollywood celebrity who has paid tribute to Naya Rivera following her tragic death at the age of 33. Her Glee co-star Heather Morris has shared a lot of her thoughts and feelings following Naya’s initial disappearance, and members of the cast even went to Lake Piru to honor their former co-star. It’s been an emotional time for a lot of people, but I am grateful Naya Rivera’s body was able to be recovered and that people close to the actress will be able to properly grieve.
