Ozark Season 4 will be the final season for Jason Bateman's acclaimed drama, and as fans would expect, it'll bring some sort of conclusion to the story of Marty Byrde and his family. The Byrde family has lived in a rough situation since the start of the series, so it only makes sense that showrunner Chris Mundy teased a reckoning of sorts for Wendy and Marty, specifically.
The Byrdes have bounced between wanting to escape their complicated lives to embracing it, and even finding some sort of normalcy within it. Now the pressure is on, and with the responsibility of running the money-laundering operation for Omar Navarro's cartel squarely on their shoulders, Mundy teased during a pre-recorded panel for Ozark at PaleyFest LA (via Bleeding Cool) what Marty and Wendy will need to wrestle with in the coming episodes.
You're going to learn what they want their end game to be, and they're going to have to reckon with it a little bit. There's that great scene between Laura [Linney] and Tom [Pelphrey] when they're in the megastore parking lot in the car, and there's a line Miki Johnson wrote, when Wendy says [something] like: 'When you've been running for your life, everything else seems exceedingly dull.' If they're [Marty and Wendy] trying to look to see if there's an out, they've got to figure out if that's what they want, and if so, what's the version of it that they want. Then reckoning with that after so much chaos — that's going to bubbling under the surface.
At the end of Season 3, it seemed like Marty and Wendy didn't have many solid options on how to proceed. They could do what Omar Navarro wanted and continue to launder money through their businesses, or they could be killed without a second thought, much like their partner Helen Pierce.
Marty has been offered an out by the FBI, but even then, the options are not great. He'd have to take a plea deal and serve some form of a prison sentence in return for his family's immunity. On top of that, the fact that the best at the FBI can't quite nail Marty to the wall for a crime they know he's committing may cause concern when it comes to whether or not they can effectively protect the family from the cartel in the long (and short) term.
The third option is to stay the course, which may have proven to be a non-option for Marty and Wendy after witnessing Helen's death. The Ozark couple now fully knows who they're in league with, and how quickly they could be eliminated without a second thought. Does either of them want to live their lives with that possibility always hanging over their heads? Obviously these may be the types of questions Season 4 will wrestle with.
