Back in 1995, the world was gifted the movie Clueless. A TV adaptation soon followed on ABC with much of the original cast (besides Alicia Silverstone) reprising their signature roles. Following a switch to UPN after its first season, Clueless ended in 1999 with three seasons under its fashionable belt. Fast forward a little over twenty years later, and Clueless could be coming back to TV with a mysterious, new twist.
Yes, Variety is reporting that the Clueless TV show reboot is in development, and it's heading to a familiar place. The project is reportedly going to NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock, which will also be the home to the Saved by the Bell revival/reboot. But what about that mysterious twist?
Well, Cher Horowitz has apparently pulled an Alison DiLaurentis from Pretty Little Liars and vanished into thin air. Someone call the new Unsolved Mysteries! Okay, not really. Disappearing acts seem to be a recurring theme with teen shows, and the new Clueless show will have a great way of handling this element. Apparently, the focus will shift to the scene-stealing, Dionne “Dee” Davenport.
Yes, Dionne will finally be front-and-center. The untitled comedy series would follow Dionne as she takes over as the most popular girl in school. The show itself is described as “baby pink” and “bisexual blue-tinted.” There are also allusions to Dionne and her friends’ love of tiny sunglasses while adding in “oat milk” lattes and Adderall.
As Dionne takes on her new place in school, she will also be investigating what became of BFF Cher. The new Clueless TV show is still only in its early days of development at Peacock, so here's hoping it makes it all the way.
In the twenty-five-year-old movie, Stacey Dash portrayed Dionne and, when the 1996 TV show came around, Dash reprised the role. Time will tell if she'll somehow be involved in the Clueless TV reboot actually sees the light of day.
Alicia Silverstone and Stacy Dash are widely known for their performances but, believe it or not, Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon could have been Dionne and Cher. But in the end, Silverstone and Dash ended up getting the much-sought-after roles, and their iconic takes on their characters have lived on, as has the legacy of the film.
Back in 2018, news of a Clueless remake made the rounds, though nothing materialized at that time. Now, two years later, it is clear that interest in the franchise is still alive and well. It'll be interesting to see if the new Clueless TV show makes it past development. Personally speaking, it sounds like a more-than-worthy venture, especially since it focuses on Dionne.
Growing up, I was obsessed with the Clueless movie and TV show. It was always tough to watch the latter because I couldn't always find what channel it was on. (This is before DVR, kids.) I do, however, recall it being syndicated on Nickelodeon and that I was thrilled to catch an episode. And if the new show makes it to Peacock, fans will be able to enjoy it all in one place.
Since the project is still in the development stages, there is no premiere date for the potential Clueless reboot, so stay tuned.
