Was 90 Day Fiance's Big Scene With Jess And Colt Really Necessary?
Warning! The following contains spoilers for the 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? episode "Hot Tempers and Cold Feet." Read at your own risk!
Some of the major arcs of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?'s current season are reaching their end, which meant it was do-or-die time for Colt Johnson and Jess Caroline. The couple was already on shaky ground after Colt's mother Debbie got into it during the Brazil trip, and things had been rocky since. Here, Jess took a trip to America to visit Colt, but as the audience learned in the previous episode, it wasn't for positive, heartwarming reasons.
Colt invited Jess to stay with him in America for a planned trip from Brazil. What Colt didn't add was that he was living with Vanessa Guerra, a woman Jess disliked, and he somehow thought it would be better to break that news in person. Little did Colt know, Jess had a surprise of her own. She had correspondence with 8 different women to whom Colt had sent illicit pictures or "dick pics.: Both parties dropped their respective bombs on camera, and as it was happening, I couldn't help but wonder if this couldn't have just happened on a video call.
Both Jess and Colt had some pretty big relationship ending bombs to drop, but they somehow waited for Jess to travel across from Brazil to America for 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? to get it on camera? Even as life-changing a moment as it was, that didn't feel at all like how things would go down in real life, and while I can't prove it, I almost wondered if the two had already agreed on their split ahead of filming what audiences saw.
Granted, I didn't necessarily solidify my theory until Jess Caroline went from that breakup to a lunch date with Colt's ex-wife Larissa Dos Santos. Sure, Larissa is local and also followed by the show, so it probably wasn't hard to get that meeting arranged, but still. Jess didn't want much to do with Larissa when Colt's ex (who has faced deportation issues) called her earlier in the season, so to see the two of them having lunch and talking about Colt was a bit weird.
Okay, it was very weird, also because both women chose to have their conversation in English, which is a second language for both. Being native Brazilians, I'd expect their conversation to be in Portuguese, especially for Jess, since she's not as strong an English speaker. Stars and family members speaking their native languages is a pretty common occurrence on this show, so it was just another questionable detail that just made the whole end of the couple's storyline feel manufactured.
Not to say I don't believe these events happened, but I do question if Jess Caroline and Colt Johnson were already done as a couple before the show put it on camera. The whole thing just felt entirely too messy and purposefully painful for everyone involved, and considering these are all people living actual lives, someone should have dropped some necessary exposition before it got to that point. The upside is it looks like this couple is finally done, and hopefully, they're ready to move on with other relationships where there aren't quite so many lies involved.
