Goodbye CBS All Access, hello Paramount+, eventually. The home of Star Trek: Discovery (and many more big shows) is getting rebranded, and the streaming service has a new batch of shows in the works. One of those projects is a new drama from Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan, which is a sure sign that Paramount is doubling down on its partnership with the Yellowstone showrunner in the wake of its colossal success.
Fans will recall that Taylor Sheridan signed an overall production and development deal with ViacomCBS earlier this year. Fast forward to the present, and the first new TV show from that deal is in the works. The drama's title is Lioness, per Deadline, and it will feature features a premise that fans of Sheridan’s previous film work may find excitingly familiar.
Lioness centers on a young Marine who is recruited to befriend a terrorist’s daughter to bring the organization down from the inside. I do not know about you, but there is a touch of both the Taylor Sheridan-written Sicario and Yellowstone here. (In terms of the latter show, Sheridan includes a military veteran in the form of former US Navy SEAL, Kayce Dutton.) When Lioness will pounce on the to-be-rebranded Paramount+ is unclear this early in the process.
Former Wipeout co-host and Teen Wolf star Jill Wagner is among those listed as an executive producer on Lioness, though it is unclear if she will take on an on-screen role in the series. Wagner is no stranger to Hallmark movies, so a Taylor Sheridan drama would be an undoubted change of pace from the projects she's been used to of late.
CBS All Access recently announced that that the rebrand and its subsequent launch of Paramount+ will happen early in 2021, and Lioness won't be the only new show slated to arrive. There will be a scripted miniseries based on the making of a little film called The Godfather fittingly entitled The Offer. The streaming service is also prepping a revival of The CW-turned-BET series The Game. A continuation of Behind the Music is also on the way, though it'll somewhat confusingly be titled MTV's Behind the Music – The Top 40.
For all the true-crime enthusiasts out there missing Criminal Minds on CBS, there will be a docuseries spinoff called The Real Criminal Minds. Will it be what The Real Housewives has been to Desperate Housewives? I doubt it, but in any case, The Real Criminal Minds and Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming TV show already have a lot of company.
When Paramount+ takes over the branding, it will be able to boast the aforementioned Star Trek franchise and all of its current and upcoming projects, as well as the highly anticipated remake of Stephen King’s The Stand. Interestingly, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone is not streaming on CBS All Access at this point, as it is currently parked at NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
