Star Trek: Discovery Officially Renewed For Season 4 At CBS All Access, And There's More Good News
Now is a good time to be a fan of Star Trek TV! Not only has the third season of Star Trek: Discovery premiered on CBS All Access, but now the CBS streamer has officially guaranteed that more adventures are still to come. Discovery has been renewed for Season 4, and the big announcement reveals that there's more good news.
CBS All Access released a video announcing the Star Trek: Discovery renewal for Season 4. While the renewal itself isn't the biggest shock considering the expansion of the Star Trek universe on the small screen, confirmation that more episodes are officially on the way can only come as a relief to fans. On top of the renewal news, the streamer also announced that production begins a lot sooner than even the most hopeful fans might have guessed: November 2.
Yes, production on the fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery will begin just a couple of weeks after the premiere of the third season, which dropped some game-changing reveals that may have presented the franchise's greatest challenge yet. Now, fans don't have to worry even a little bit that Discovery will only have one season to tell that story. While some other streaming shows are being cancelled despite previous renewals, Discovery is boldly moving forward!
With Season 3 only just beginning, fans can only speculate about what could happen in Season 4. The good news is that Sonequa Martin-Green and Doug Jones both appeared in the announcement video and shared their excitement about starting the new season in early November, so it's probably safe to say that both Michael Burnham and Saru will survive the events of Season 3. They appeared with executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise to break the big news. Take a look:
Star Trek: Discovery ended Season 2 with a massive time jump forward that provides an extremely blank slate for Season 3 and beyond, especially compared to its original placement in the Star Trek timeline. Being set in the years ahead of the original series did mean that characters like Spock and Pike could appear without contradicting any existing canon, but it also restricted how big Discovery could get.
Discovery couldn't do anything to change the state of the galaxy when there were so many shows and moves set in its not-too-distant future. All bets are off for Season 3 and now Season 4. The success of Star Trek: Discovery ushered in a new era for Trek on television as well. Discovery launched in 2017, and the years since have seen the premieres of Short Treks, Picard, and Lower Decks, with two more spinoffs on the way with Prodigy and Strange New Worlds.
For now, you can find the first three seasons of Star Trek: Discovery so far streaming on CBS All Access, along with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard. As for earlier Star Trek entries, you can find plenty of additional movies and series streaming as well. If you're in the market for some TV options set elsewhere than the Star Trek universe, check out our 2020 fall premiere schedule!
