Britney Spears Appears Closer Than Ever To Making 'Free Britney' A Reality
One of the biggest battles that has hung over Britney Spears' career may be coming closer to an end. The pop singer has been in a legal battle with her father Jamie Spears over getting him removed as the co-conservator of her estate, and it's looking like her legal team is presenting the court with documents that could make "Free Britney" a reality.
New documents suggest that Britney Spears' business manager from Tristar Sports and Entertainment Group, Michael Kane, abruptly quit. According to documents obtained by ET, Spears and her legal team allege that Kane was hired by Jamie Spears without her knowledge and without telling her of the fees his services would cost. Spears' attorney lays out the whole situation:
If granted, Britney Spears would get her father removed from managing her estate, bringing an end to an agreement put in place back in 2008. After Spears' very public breakdowns, Jamie Spears was granted conservatorship over the pop star's assets and named the sole person legally responsible for her personal assets and estate. Spears has since recovered from the episode and has led a successful career with tours and a Las Vegas residency to boot.
Despite that, Jamie Spears' conservatorship continued and has allowed him to make business deals on her behalf, control her money, and even restrict people from her life he feels may be damaging to her well-being. This is something sometimes granted to adults who may be tasked with caring for an elderly parent, but not as common for younger individuals. This is especially true in the case of someone in a position like Britney Spears, who has largely led a productive life (though not entirely free of other episodes) since 2008.
In this latest news, Britney Spears and her legal team are asking that Bessemer Trust Company be named as the sole conservator of her estate. This likely would address any possible concerns about Spears being taken advantage of by others looking to sign her to future deals, and task a third party that would potentially give her more freedom over various aspects of her life. It's unclear whether or not this will happen, but a recent successful petition by Spears to expand her legal team has generated some optimism.
