For years on HGTV Chip and Joanna Gaines let fans in on their workday, but also their charming white farmhouse where the magic of homemaking was always at work. Fixer Upper always felt warm and personal. Now, the two are returning to television with their very own Magnolia Network and bringing Fixer Upper back to boot. Only there will be some changes with the return of the series and one of them is a component to the original series the fans may really miss.
How The New Fixer Upper Will Change On Magnolia Network
If you remember the kids coming around on set to bring Mom takeout for dinner, or the kids running around at home to feed the chickens, getting involved in memorable ways during the original episodes of Fixer Upper themselves, there will be a whole lot less of that moving forward. The reason makes sense though. Joanna Gaines revealed to People that one of the things about the HGTV show that wasn’t working toward the end was the kids wanting to do other things. She noted:
We want to be smart when it comes to our kids. When we first started the show, they were younger, and since they’re a part of so much of what we do, it was just organic to include them. But toward the end I started noticing, they don’t necessarily love this.
Like any good parent would, Joanna Gaines noticed her kids were less stoked about creating TV moments as the HGTV show was wrapping back in 2018. This time around, her kids are older and more able to make decisions regarding how they want to spend their time; whether or not that will include Magnolia Network remains to be seen. So it makes sense that this change would be made, even if it means losing one of the components that added so much charm the first time around.
Could The Gaines Kids Ever Come Back To Fixer Upper?
Chip and Joanna Gaines do have a system in place that could potentially incorporate their kids should they want to be involved in the new Fixer Upper in more limited doses. It’s their choice to be in the public eye or not. So, there's a chance we may not miss that facet of Fixer Upper completely; yet, it’s definitely going to be a different program moving forward.
Now, if they volunteer to be a part, we are more than happy, but we never want to just force it for a scene. They can make that choice. We’ll see as much of the kids as they want to give us.
While we as fans may miss some of those quiet and intimate family moments, it seems like a better plan for the Gaines family overall. Particularly given that when Fixer Upper was originally wrapping, Chip mentioned it was so they could “step back and take a break” and make sure their family priorities were straight.
Now, there’s a new plan in place and one that will hopefully be flexible for the family and still fun for fans. One thing’s for certain: I’m sure we’ll still get plenty of Chip and Joanna Gaines banter. Magnolia Network is expected to begin its official run in the (hopefully) near future and Fixer Upper will be a part of that lineup.
