Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano Getting One Of Two Announced The Mandalorian Spinoff Shows
The Mandalorian has been a big hit for Disney+ and the Star Wars franchise, so it's not surprising both are interested in widening the show's footprint on streaming going forward. Disney announced at its 2020 investors call that there are two spinoffs directly related to the series in development, and yes, one is directly tied to Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano.
Two series, Ahsoka and Star Wars Rangers of the New Republic, were both announced as direct spinoffs to The Mandalorian. No footage was revealed, but take a look at the official show logos below and continue on to read what we learned during the presentation.
The first series, Ahsoka, presumably will continue the adventures of Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano shortly before or after her appearance in The Mandalorian. An Ahsoka Tano standalone series had been rumored for streaming prior to the reveal, though it was unclear whether that was leaked information or just wishful thinking by fans.
As for what Ahsoka Tano's arc may be in the series, that remains to be seen. When she made her debut in The Mandalorian, she told Din Djarin she would not train Grogu in the ways of a Jedi. Ahsoka's timeline in the post-Return of the Jedi era is unknown, so this series will presumably fill out those details and potentially give Star Wars new territory to play with during the time between and during the events of the new trilogy movies.
The second spinoff, Rangers of the New Republic, will also be set within the timeline of The Mandalorian. Though little information was revealed on the series, rangers in past Star Wars canon have existed as a form of law enforcement in the galaxy. Given the recent Marshal status of Gina Carano's character and the increased interaction with New Republic enforcers in the Outer Rim, it seems possible more on this series or one of its characters could appear in The Mandalorian ahead of the series' official premiere.
The most exciting and concrete detail from Kathleen Kennedy beyond the timeline of the two spinoffs is that all shows would culminate in "one exciting conclusion." It appears all three shows will meet in the middle at some point, though exactly how remains to be seen. This could be a situation similar to what Netflix and Marvel did during their collaboration, where all three shows come to a head for some major crossover event. It could even be a feature-length movie, which would be fitting considering the recent push of studios to put new high-budget features on their streaming services.
The Mandalorian airs new episodes Fridays on Disney+. Continue to stick with CinemaBlend for all the latest on the franchise, and for more news in television and movies.
