When The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina dropped on Netflix two years ago, it brought back some major '90s nostalgia. The show was hotly anticipated and viewers quickly got reacquainted with Sabrina Spellman and her two witchy aunts, originally introduced in Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. Now it looks like there will be some serious nods to the original TGIF series, as the Netflix show is adding some OG cast members.
Even though the series is classified as a reboot of the iconic Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, this new Sabrina Spellman brings a completely different vibe to the screen. As the coming-of-age witch wrestles with her human and witch ancestry, the good and evil within her, viewers see the town of Westbridge take a much darker turn.
Some great news for returning fans of the Spellman family, though: Netflix just released a clip of the series' upcoming 4th Chapter. The clip reveals Sabrina meeting her aunties... her OG aunties. That’s right, Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick, the original Hilda and Zelda Spellman, are back and reprising their old roles!
This is not a recast, though, as the clip has another surprise for fans: it appears that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set to break the fourth wall in the next chapter. The clip shows a confused Sabrina in her recognizable home speaking with apparent strangers posing as her aunts. The confusion mounts when a laugh track is heard in the background and a director with a set crew burst in. It would seem Sabrina is trapped in some sort of our-world version of her.
Not only does this bring a lot of excitement to the release of the next chapter, but also may answer a few questions. A lot went down in the previous chapter of the series, including a possible time loop/paradox situation. This new sneak peek may just be the result of said paradox, and among many consequences.
The previously mentioned director who appears in the sneak peek is none other than Father Blackwood, the antagonist of the previous chapters of the series. Sabrina recognizes him, but appears unthreatened, if not perplexed. He himself appears unaware of his dastardly past. It is unclear if Blackwood is merely another victim of the time paradox, or if his presence will bring more trouble for the young witch.
While the return of the original Hilda and Zelda is a welcome and pleasant surprise, the two veteran Spellman sisters have stepped into a very different world than they are used to. The original Spellmans were far from evil, and their magic was portrayed in a positive light. It will be interesting to see how the good witches fare in this world where powers come from the Devil himself.
The 4th and last chapter of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set to be released to Netflix on December 31st. While the release will be bittersweet for fans, the series should have a satisfying wrap up. For more binging content, check out what else is coming to Netflix soon!
