Sonic The Hedgehog: 5 Things We Want To See In Netflix's Sonic Prime TV Show
Listen, I’m old enough to remember when Steve Urkel voiced Sonic the Hedgehog. So, me and the blue blur, we go back a way. That’s why when I heard that Sonic the Hedgehog was getting yet another new show, this time on Netflix called Sonic Prime, I cautiously rubbed my chin. Because this could go one of 3 ways: It could be really great, like Sonic X and the Saturday morning cartoon, Sonic the Hedgehog. It could be Godawful like Sonic Underground and the original cartoon, The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Or, it could be just okay (but still really fun!) like Sonic Boom.
Honestly, as long as it’s not The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog bad (“That’s no good”), then I think I’ll be okay with Sonic Prime. But I want it to be better than okay, dammit! Because I really liked the recent Sonic the Hedgehog movie (and my kids loved it-mostly), so I want to love this new show, too! I already talked about 5 classic characters that I want to see in the next Sonic movie, but here are 5 things I want to see in the new Sonic TV show. Don’t blink!
Sonic’s Closest Allies. Obviously
So far, from what I’ve read from official Netflix info, the new Sonic show will have the “fate of a strange new multiverse” (What is this? Dr. Strange?) in Sonic’s hands. Now note, Netflix mentions Sonic. Not Tails. Not Knuckles. Not Amy Rose. Just Sonic. And no. I don’t want just Sonic. I want the whole squad.
That’s because every Sonic cartoon has had somebody to accompany Sonic. Now, you might be saying, "Well, obviously, they’re going to include at least some of Sonic’s friends for this new show." But don’t be so sure. As we all know, the recent movie didn’t include any of Sonic’s familiar friends until the end credits, so this might be a solo effort as well. Which I don’t want! Give me Knuckles, or give me death!
Dr. Eggman/Robotnik, But Some New Villains, Too
The show has to have Dr. Eggman, a.k.a, Dr. Robotnik, right? That’s pretty much a given. Jim Carrey played him with geeky verve and pizazz in the movie, and I think a lot of kids will be familiar with that version of the character. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if a slim, wonky Dr. Robotnik is what we get in this new TV show, rather than the usually round, pompous buffoon that we’ve gotten in cartoons' past, and I’m okay with that. This show isn’t for me anyway, right? It’s for my kids.
That said, I don’t just want Dr. Robotnik. Previous shows have relied on Robotnik’s character to drive almost all of the stories forward, and that’s fine. He is Sonic’s main antagonist, after all. But I would also love if Shadow drove his own conflict against Sonic as well. In fact, I would even prefer if Shadow was the main antagonist against Sonic on this new show. I’m not sure what kind of show that would even look like, but I’m interested. It’s certainly something that we’ve never seen before.
Some Obscure References To Deep Sonic Lore
Sonic lore is like, really weird. Besides the Chaos Emeralds, there are a whole bunch of really obscure characters who have never been caught dead in a Sonic show before. I’m looking at you, Big the Cat/Silver the Hedgehog/Rouge the Bat! I mean, because why not, right? Sonic the Hedgehog has a long list of really weird characters and events. And being that this story is supposed to involve a “multiverse,” I really don’t see why it can’t include some of the deepest cuts in the Sonic universe.

How deep are we talking about? Oh, I don’t know. Maybe Sonic could turn into a Werehog, a la Sonic Unleashed, for a Halloween episode. Or maybe he could wield a sword like he did in Sonic and the Black Knight? Hell, I even want Sonic 06 to be referenced somehow. I definitely want this show to be accessible to all ages, but little winks and nods to some of Sonic’s weirder adventures would be much appreciated! You betcha!
A Connection To Some Of The Past Sonic Cartoon Series
Do you remember the game Sonic Generations? I’m guessing if you know who Big the Cat and Rouge the Bat are, then you definitely do. But if you don’t, well, Sonic Generations was a game that included both the old, stubby, Genesis Sonic as well as the long-legged, more modern Sonic from the 3D adventures, and it was a total blast! It also got me thinking just how much I love both versions of the character, which got me imagining how cool it would be if the “multiverse” of this new show also somehow included old cartoon versions of the character.
Hear me out here! You know what franchise does this really well? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In fact, both the 2012 series as well as the 2003 series brought back the 1987 Turtles on both their series. And I want to see that! I want the Sonic from Sonic Boom to meet the one from Sonic Prime, and I want both of them to meet Jaleel White Sonic from The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog. How cool would that be? Legacy rules!
That Said, I Want Something Totally Different From Any Other Sonic Series That Has Come Before It
I may be a hypocrite, but I also want this show to be nothing like any of the other Sonic shows that have come before it. Because that’s the thing about the Sonic TV shows. They’ve all been really different. Sonic Underground may have been too different for my liking, but I do admire how it strayed away from the 2 other Sonic shows that came before it. And Sonic Boom was just really jokey, which I have come to appreciate when I watch the reruns on Hulu.
In that way, I want Sonic Prime to set itself apart, too, which it should, since Man of Action Entertainment, which was the creative team behind the excellent cartoon, Ben 10, are going to be the showrunners. I’ve been a fan of Sonic since 1991, so I feel like I’ve seen pretty much every spikey side of the blue hedgehog. And now, I want to see a new one. In other words, I want this to be the Knuickles’ Chaotix of Sonic shows. Can you do that for me, Netflix?
In the end, I’m a little on the fence about Sonic Prime. I don’t really think we need a new Sonic show, but I am kind of anticipating what a new one could be like. But what are your thoughts on this? Sound off in the poll or in the comments section down below.
