When Chicago Med Vet Yaya DaCosta's New Fox Show With The Resident's Morris Chestnut Will Debut
News broke just last week that Yaya DaCosta would be leaving her longtime home at NBC and role as Nurse April Sexton on Chicago Med for a brand new project, and the new show takes her to Fox. In fact, the new show, called Our Kind of People, will see DaCosta team up with an actor who has been a familiar face on Fox for several years now: Morris Chestnut of The Resident fame. Now, Fox already has good news for those wondering when Our Kind of People will be ready for primetime.
Our Kind of People starring Yaya DaCosta and Morris Chestnut will premiere on Fox in the fall of the 2021-2022 TV season. Although no precise date has been released just yet, Fox has announced that episodes will air on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET starting in the fall. Our Kind of People will take the slot previously held by Prodigal Son, which was recently cancelled.
The Tuesday time slot for the new show confirms that Yaya DaCosta won't be competing with her previous show on Wednesdays, and Morris Chestnut's new show will be paired with his current show, as The Resident will hold onto its 8 p.m. ET time slot on Tuesdays. Our Kind of People means that DaCosta will be giving up the scrubs that she's been wearing for Chicago Med for six seasons and moving on completely, but Chestnut will continue to recur on The Resident.
That's not to say that The Resident and Our Kind of People will share a TV universe, though, because Morris Chestnut will be playing a different character. Our Kind of People is based on the critically acclaimed book Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class by Lawrence Otis Graham, and stars Morris Chestnut as Raymond DuPont and Yaya DaCosta as Angela Vaughn. The show is set in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard, an aspirational world and historical stronghold where the rich and powerful black elite have come for over half a century.
Yaya DaCosta's Angela Vaughn is a strong-willed single mom who has a revolutionary haircare line that highlights the natural beauty of black women as she works to reclaim her family name, but a dark secret about her mom's past not only turns her life upside down, but shakes up the Oak Bluffs community.
As for Morris Chestnut's Raymond DuPont, Deadline reports that he is a powerful man as the top executive at a food conglomerate, working to revive the company after the mismanagement of his white business partner Jack almost destroyed everything. Described as a "soapy, thrilling exploration of race and class in America" as well as an "unapologetic celebration of black resilience and achievement," Our Kind of People hails from Lee Daniels of Empire and Star fame in his return to Fox.
You can look forward to Our Kind of People when it premieres on Fox in the fall. For now, you can find Morris Chestnut in what remains of The Resident Season 4 (which already said goodbye to one star) and Yaya DaCosta in what is left of Chicago Med Season 6.
