New Amsterdam Clip Reveals Max's Struggles With Luna Getting Worse In 'Devastating' New Episode
New Amsterdam has only a few episodes left before Season 3 comes to an end, but the medical drama (which has already been renewed for the 2021-2022 TV season) definitely isn't saving all the drama for the finale. A new clip for the May 18 episode (seen above) shows that Max's ongoing struggles with raising Luna as a single dad while also running New Amsterdam as the medical industry still recovers from COVID are worse than ever, and there could be "devastating" consequences.
The clip from the May 18 episode of New Amsterdam, called "Things Fall Apart," reveals that Max's normal nanny for the day cancelled, resulting in a last-minute call to his in-laws to look after Luna. While Gwen and Calvin initially seem happy to spend some time with their granddaughter, the mood turns somewhat sour (presumably much like the yogurt in Max's shoe) when they see the mess in the apartment, and this could well lead into what the official episode description reveals about what's in store:
If their "devastating news" for Max in this episode has something to do with Luna's living situation, it might actually be hard to blame Gwen and Calvin, even though New Amsterdam has shown over and over again why Max is so busy. Luna's grandparents haven't seen Max pushing himself to the brink at the hospital while also doing his very best by his daughter; they just see Luna eating takeout for breakfast with dried food on her face, a smoking appliance with burned food, the smell of what I have to assume is at least partly the yogurt, mess everywhere, and no food fit for Luna in the whole apartment. And no wipes!
The scene seems like it might be setting the grandparents up to want to take Luna to live with them, as they were hesitant about returning her to Max in the first place after taking her in during the worst of COVID. While there's no denying that things can't keep going the way they are for little Luna's sake, it would certainly be devastating for Max if losing Luna is even a possibility.
Then again, there are plenty of other reasons that his in-laws could have devastating news for him, and fans can only speculate for now. New Amsterdam isn't exactly a sitcom, and Max has had to roll with a lot of devastating punches over the course of the show already. And in fact, "Things Fall Apart" is going to pit Max against a new kind of challenge that could put the doctors and nurses as well as the patients of New Amsterdam in danger, when a pipe bursts and plunges the ED – which can be chaotic even on its best days – into further chaos.
If Max gets devastating news during or after the day it seems he's going to have at work, the man may need a vacation sooner rather than later! Or at least another heart-to-heart with Helen. With the Season 3 finale fast-approaching, however, the drama isn't likely to let up any time soon.
See what happens as Max's struggles with Luna escalate and his in-laws drop some news on him when "Things Fall Apart" airs on Tuesday, May 18 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. For some viewing options once New Amsterdam heads into hiatus, check out our 2021 summer TV premiere schedule.
