As fans gear up for the violent and hilarious cinematic tale that is sure to be James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, the writer-director is also prepping a small-screen spinoff -- Peacemaker! The HBO Max show is set to focus on John Cena’s violently dedicated hero before the events of the upcoming film, and it will also expand on the mythology laid out in the motion picture. The series is currently filming in Vancouver, though it’s been reported that an original cast member is now being replaced with a Bridgerton alum. We also have reported details on why the change is happening.
Chris Conrad, who joined Peacemaker as Adrian Chase/The Vigilante, has reportedly departed the series. Per Deadline, Conrad’s exit was due to creative differences and, while it may be surprising, the trade reports that the decision was amicable. With this, the actor will be replaced by Freddie Stroma, who Bridgerton fans likely know as Prince Friedrich.
Freddie Stroma is no stranger to high-profile franchises as, aside from cultural juggernaut Bridgerton, he also played the role of Cormac McLaggen in the final three Harry Potter movies. Stroma has also appeared in shows like Game of Thrones, Unreal and the Kevin James-led Netflix comedy The Crew.
Freddie Stroma’s character, Adrian Chase, has a rich history in the pages of DC Comics. First introduced in 1982, the character was established as a district attorney but, following the death of his wife and kids at the hands of mobsters, he decided to seek justice in a different way. With this, he became known on the streets as Vigilante, a skilled marksman and capable hand-to-hand fighter. Vigilante also has the ability to heal from his injuries quickly and regenerate his body when faced with injuries like stabbings or gunshot wounds.
When it comes to Peacemaker, not much is known in the way of specifics, though it has been revealed that the show will see Steve Agee reprise his The Suicide Squad role of John Economos. It wouldn’t be crazy to think that more characters from the film could appear on the show. Economos is an aide of Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, so there’s definitely a chance the Oscar-winner could reprise her role as well. But all in all, the show should be a nice companion to James Gunn’s film. The film is set to release in both theaters and on HBO Max, which you can sign up for using this link.
It’ll be interesting to see how Peacemaker continues to take shape. While the departure of Chris Conrad is unfortunate, it would appear the show has landed a capable star in the form of Freddie Stroma. It’ll likely be a while before we get our first look at the show but, until then, you can enjoy John Cena’s various public appearances as Peacemaker, which even James Gunn can’t get enough of.
