In the age of reboots, revivals, and reunions, fans can’t help but hope that their favorite characters will reunite once again. And it’s never too early to start planning for a reunion show. Despite Fox sitcom New Girl coming to an end just three years ago, creator and showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether has some thoughts on whether or not Zooey Deschanel and cast will get together for a special episode.
Following Friends: The Reunion’s recent HBO Max release and iCarly’s impending Paramount+ premiere, other shows doing reunions or revivals is on lots of minds. One show that many fans still can’t get enough of is Zooey Deschanel’s New Girl, which came to an end in 2018 after seven seasons. Elizabeth Meriwether came together with the cast at Variety’s TVFest and mentioned when she thinks there could be a New Girl reunion show in the future:
I think we need a little more water under the bridge is what I’ll say, but yeah. When it feels right, when the universe says it’s time, I will be there with my little tippy-tap computer writing stuff.
When New Girl came to an end in 2018, it didn’t feel like an ending to the whole story of Jess and her friends, as so much more could have happened when we left the characters the way we did. It did feel like an ending to one chapter in their story, however, and they were all going their separate ways, leaving the apartment, until they weren’t. Elizabeth Meriwether explains how hard it was to let go of the characters that have been part of her life and why the Fox sitcom ended the way it did:
It was really hard for me to let them go… I felt like it was very hard to not know what happened in their lives. We just wanted to show that everyone was happy and okay because you really do fall in love with these characters.
Even though much of the New Girl cast have taken on new roles after the series ended, it seems like the characters and show will always be with them. With the show on Netflix, new fans are discovering just how hilarious Jess, Nick and everyone else are. The series ran on Fox from 2011-2018 and remained a critically acclaimed show, and also remains popular with viewers.
While it may be a little early to expect a New Girl reunion, it’s never too early to hope for one. The cast may all be doing something different but the show will always be with them. Maybe it’ll be like a Friends: The Reunion deal and we’ll see them together many years down the road? You never know what the future has in store. In the meantime, all seven seasons of New Girl are streaming on Netflix.
