The newest NCIS show, NCIS: Hawai’i was picked up to series a couple of months ago and now filming has officially started. Not only that, but it looks like the CBS newcomer could be looking at another home, in addition to the major network, when the series premieres in the fall.
The drama celebrated the start of filming and being inducted into the CBS ohana with a traditional Hawaiian blessing on the island of Oahu in honor of its Hawaiian culture. Series stars Vanessa Lachey, Noah Mills, Jason Antoon, Yasmine Al-Bustami, and Tori Anderson, as well as producers and crew on NCIS: Hawai’i participated in the ceremony, which “centered on the constant motion of the ocean and how the moving ocean waters, driven by the winds and tides, connects the planet.” The show’s Twitter posted a picture from the blessing, as well as more news:
It should be pointed out that in NCIS: Hawai’i’s tweet, not only did the show announce that production has started on the new series, but that it will be on both CBS and its streaming service, Paramount+, in the fall. Beyond FX on Hulu, shows typically don’t promote the parent network and streaming home at the same time. With NCIS: Hawai’i joining its fellow CBS shows in releasing episodes on Paramount+ the day after its linear airing on CBS, though, it’s not surprising that the show confirmed it.
However, since it’s already pushing its presence on the streamer beforehand while being on a network with viewership as high as CBS’ for several shows, it’s interesting to see if the new series will have a more prominent presence on the streamer compared with other CBS originals.
With CBS originals SEAL Team and Evil moving to Paramount+, it’s not surprising that the network wants to try some cross-promotion. The newest addition to the NCIS franchise could be the perfect stepping stone for whatever else CBS could have planned with Paramount+, even though it’s clear that the series is sticking to the network, at least for its first season. Although it’s not unusual for a show to promote its streaming home aside from network airings, to have it done in the same tweet prior to a show’s premiere could mean that there’s something bigger in store for the upcoming series.
Meanwhile, NCIS: Hawai’i has already been receiving love, as stars from NCIS: LA were quick to share their excitement about the show when it was first announced it was in development. And, when the show announced on Twitter that production started, fellow Hawaii series Magnum P.I. gave NCIS: Hawai’i a warm welcome:
