Through The Big Bang Theory and The Flight Attendant, Kaley Cuoco was able to showcase different sides of herself through the characters of Penny and Cassie Bowden. And occasionally, she had to perform intimate scenes. While Cuoco filmed some bedroom scenes on Big Bang Theory, Flight Attendant actually featured a sex scene -- and in the first episode at that. As can imagine, the actress had a time navigating this unfamiliar territory, and she hilariously recalled the experience of doing her first-ever sex scene on the HBO Max series.
While Kaley Cuoco may have been a novice when it came to doing sex scenes, that didn’t stop her from taking the challenge head-on. Unfortunately, the moment didn’t go as smoothly as her comedic or dramatic scenes, according to the actress. The Flight Attendant star said about filming intimate scenes:
I had never done any sort of sex scene ever, and I had one in Flight Attendant with Michiel [Huisman]. He’d been in Game of Thrones, so he’d done all these scenes, and I just had no idea. When they called ‘cut,’ I’d be hovering over him like I was on a toilet. I’m like, ‘I’m not touching anything, I’m not looking at anything.’ (Laughs.) I didn’t know what to do. He was like, ‘You’re acting so weird, you’re making this way weirder than it needs to be.’ But I was totally out of my element.
Kaley Cuoco’s words spoke of an actress who's still trying to learn new things, despite her wealth of experience. To be honest, the fact that this was only her first love scene is pretty surprising, given the sex symbol status she earned early in her career. Still, this revelation and the fact that Cuoco was so awkward while performing the scene just make her that much more relatable. Let's be honest, many of us would probably be a little off while performing such a scene for the first time.
The actress' experience has actually been brought up before. Flight Attendant co-star Michiel Huisman (a Game of Thrones vet) revealed that it took a few takes for Kaley Cuoco to feel comfortable during their plot-inducing sex scene, and recalled her initially hovering over him rather than sitting on top. Huisman and Cuoco’s accounts matched up as he mentioned her not trying to touch him. So it sounds like performing the sex scene was a hellish ordeal for both co-stars at first. Still, the moment seemed to represent something bigger for Cuoco.
While speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Comedy Actress Roundtable, The Big Bang Theory alum also said that doing The Flight Attendant was more about “trying to do something different.” She even mentioned the show allowed her to “flex different muscles” as an actress. Having been on The Big Bang Theory for over a decade, Cuoco made the right choice to star in and produce the HBO Max series.
Viewers seemed to love Kaley Cuoco's shift from Penny to Cassie, so much so that the HBO Max series scored a second season. Not only that, but the actress will also be teaming up with the streamer for another show. Needless to say, Cuoco's efforts ultimately were not in vain.
