Gwen Stefani Playfully Called Out Blake Shelton For Getting Her Married Name Wrong During Surprise Performance
The Voice's Blake Shelton and his sometimes fellow coach Gwen Stefani made music fans everywhere swoon when they tied the knot on July 3, six years after going public with an adorable romance that fans of the NBC competition series had a front-row seat for. But even dating someone for that long doesn’t save you from tripping over your words with your significant other from time to time, as it appears Shelton did during a recent pop-up performance at one of his bars — and you can bet Stefani was quick to call him out!
Blake Shelton held an impromptu performance on July 15 as a rehearsal for some upcoming shows, and the crowd that was gathered at his bar Old Red’s in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, were treated to a surprise appearance from none other than this lovely wife. The amusing mishap came when Shelton referred to her by her maiden name, rather than her new married name. Watch her sweet correction of him below:
For those who weren't able to watch, Blake Shelton introduced Gwen Stefani by her stage name to the obvious delight of the crowd, and after a few seconds, she responded with, “I thought it was Gwen Shelton now.” Naturally, it caused Shelton to laugh as the small audience started to cheer and holler in support. He'll have to work on that introduction ahead of the next show.
The couple performed a few songs together — including both No. 1 country singles ”Nobody But You" and "Happy Anywhere” — during which they made some adjustments to the tunes they will perform while on tour together. Gwen Stefani even worked with the band on a rendition of the ‘90s No Doubt classic “Don’t Speak.” And after Stefani was finished with her part of rehearsal, Blake Shelton made sure not to make the same mistake twice, as seen below as he bid a proper farewell to "Gwen Shelton."
It’s all in good fun, really, because Gwen Stefani will likely continue using her maiden name professionally, as she’s been iconic on the music scene for over two decades. After her marriage to Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale in 2002, Stefani continued using her maiden name on her music, but legally changed her name to Gwen Stefani Rossdale. After the two divorced in 2015, Stefani filed to restore her legal name to Gwen Renee Stefani. So it’s fair to assume that Stefani is now legally Gwen Shelton, but who can blame Blake for one little slip-up? (Assuming there aren't many more videos of him bungling things out there.)
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani met in 2015 as coaches on NBC’s The Voice, as Stefani was going through her divorce with Gavin Rossdale, and Shelton was dealing with the end of his marriage to Miranda Lambert. While Shelton is a mainstay in his signature Big Red Chair, Stefani has been shuffled in and out with other celebrity coaches, but even when she's not officially on The Voice in a particular season, Stefani will still often make appearances, whether it’s performing live with Shelton or conspiring against him. Maybe all that conspiring made Shelton's memory a little foggy.
Given their shared ties to the singing competition, it was fairly surprising that only one friend from The Voice was present at Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s nuptials, and no, it wasn’t Adam Levine. Host Carson Daly attended the big day, and it even appears he officiated the wedding! The affair was for close friends and family only, but surely The Voice family will continue to see plenty of the couple on set. I, for one, would love to see them battle over who gets to call their group of hopefuls "Team Shelton." Until that day comes, though, be sure to check out the 2021 Summer TV schedule to keep up with all of your shows.
