The world of Star Wars just continues to grow, and the franchise has seen some significant expansion in the realm of TV. The Mandalorian in particular has made waves since its debut and is now set to spawn a series of related shows. This means the producers are looking to bring in characters both new and old, with Grand Admiral Thrawn rumored to be on the docket. Nothing concrete has been reported yet, but rumors are now alleging that an actor has been found to play the character in the live-action world. And I’m really hoping this pans out to be true.
If a recent report is to be believed, Star Wars will be keeping things in the family when it comes to casting Thrawn in a live-action production. LRM claims that Lars Mikkelsen has been cast to play the role after having voiced the character for two seasons on Star Wars Rebels. With no clarification regarding the validity of the casting though, this report should be taken with a serious grain of salt.
Interestingly enough, the report also mentions that Star Wars has reportedly found its live-action Ezra Bridger in the form of Aladdin star Mena Massoud. Unlike Lars Mikkelsen, this isn’t the first time Massoud has been connected with a live-action Lucasfilm production. Previous reports claimed that he's the studio’s choice to play the role of Bridger.
Although we can’t say for sure whether both castings are official, both would be great. Lars Mikkelsen is an especially skilled actor, having put in a number of great performances in shows like House of Cards and Sherlock. The actor would also bring his prior knowledge of the character to the role along with that eerily calming voice of his. On top of this, he also somewhat physically resembles the character. He’d just need a blue makeover, of course.
Both Lars Mikkelsen and Mena Massoud would most likely be joining Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano series, should their castings prove to be true. During Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Tano sought answers about Thrawn’s whereabouts while on the planet Corvus. Rebels fans likely remember that in the show’s series finale, Ezra and Thrawn were dragged into hyperspace by the purrgil, and Tano, along with Sabine Wren, later sought to find Bridger.
So it may be possible that Ahsoka is looking to tie up that loose plot thread. And if we know anything about Dave Filoni, who has produced both The Mandalorian and Rebels, it’s that he loves to call back to different aspects of Star Wars lore. Both shows are available to stream on Disney+, which you can sign up for using this link.

Considering that Disney+’s Ahsoka doesn’t have confirmed dates for its release or start of production, it’ll likely be some time before fans hear anything official. You can bet, however, that after these recent reports fans are going to be clamoring for news either debunking or backing them up.
But what do you think about Lars Mikkelsen possibly playing a live-action Grand Admiral Thrawn? Let us know in the poll down below!
