Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist May Get Uncancelled, Here's What We Know
Could there still be one more song and dance left for NBC musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist? New details have come out that suggest that the series could be saved by Roku. If the deal pans out, it would give the show a wrap-up movie that could turn into something more. Here's what's going on.
Roku might be closing a deal for a two-hour movie to conclude the NBC series, which was cancelled by the network in June. The movie, which TVLine says is eyeing a debut later this year (for the holidays), could potentially bring the series additional episodes if it does well. With the fan campaigns that started immediately after the cancellation flooded social media, it wouldn’t be a surprise if people were excited about Zoey’s potentially getting that long-awaited third season.
When negotiations were still on the table for a potential Season 3, it was hopeful that if NBC chose to not renew the series that it would find a new home on its sister streaming service Peacock. When it was announced that both the network and streamer had given Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist a pass at an upcoming season, the cast, the showrunner and fans were understandably disappointed. They quickly came up with a campaign that trended all over Twitter, seeing that some other shows like Lucifer and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were saved due to campaigns.
Following the show’s cancellation, series star Jane Levy called out NBC shortly after the network's lineup was announced for the fall. While the Peacock Network basically dedicates itself to One Chicago and Law & Order, Levy pointed out that it’s a “real shame” to take a show about love off the air and keep shows about crime and guns only. Zoey’s wasn’t the only show to feel NBC’s wrath, as the network also cancelled freshman drama Debris, comedy Good Girls -- which was presumed to be shoe-in for a renewal -- and missing plane drama Manifest, which just recently bowed out of the Top 10 on Netflix after an over 50-day streak since the cancellation.
Meanwhile, fans will be pleasantly surprised to know that at least one cancellation campaign finally worked. Following the cliffhanger at the end of the Season 2 finale, when Skylar Astin’s Max was revealed to have powers of his own and he could hear Zoey’s own heart song, all anyone wanted at that time was for them to finally get together. What this wrap-up movie could entail is still up in the air, as it’s not confirmed quite yet if Roku will move forward with studio Lionsgate on the potential deal. But just the fact that fans can once again hope that they’ll be able to see Zoey, Max, Mo and everyone is enough, and maybe we’ll finally get some lingering answers about Zoey’s powers and be able to dig deeper overall.
