ABC Family Cancels Huge

Things aren’t looking good for the ABC Family drama series Huge. Word is, ABC has decided to cancel the show after just ten episodes.

Deadline posted the news, stating that ABC Family pulled the plug on the series. Huge starred Nikki Blonsky and centered on a group of teenagers at a weight loss camp.

Can anyone speculate on what went wrong here? I’ve only seen a couple of episodes and this is pure speculation but I have a feeling the show may have hit a little too close to home for a lot of people. Huge seemed to approach the issue of teen obesity from a realistic perspective, focusing on teens who, in addition to having to deal with all of the normal insecurities and stress that come with adolescence, also have to deal with the added pressure of being the chubby kid. It’s an original premise and it was definitely worth a shot as far as the series went but we’re living in an age where teens are wrapped up in shows like The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl. Even ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which focuses on a teen-mom and attempts to expose the harsh reality of the subject of teen parenting oozes with soapy, sexually charged melodrama. Given what's popular right now, kids don't seem to want a lot of reality in their drama series.

Whether they didn't watch because they couldn't relate or because they could, Huge may have been a bit too real for what a lot of young people are looking for in their TV shows right now.
