Being among the generation that associates Joey Lawrence with the word “Whoa!” and Melissa Joan Hart for having one of the coolest teen bedrooms and ladder-climbing best friends on television (insert “Hi Sam” guitar sound here), I can appreciate the idea of the two actors teamed up for a Who’s the Boss-like comedy on ABC Family. Now that I’ve sufficiently dated myself, let’s celebrate the good news. If you’re a fan of Melissa & Joey, you have plenty more to look forward to as the network announced today that they’ve given the comedy series a second-season order.

Melissa & Joey stars Melissa Joan Hart as a local politician who tasked to look after her niece and nephew after her sister is imprisoned. Joey Lawrence plays Joe, the hired “manny” who steps in to earn a paycheck looking after the kids. The series just resumed for the second half of its first season at the end of last month. Ratings are up for the show and ABC Family is ready for more. The networked ordered up eighteen episodes for Season 2, which is set to resume in 2012.

"Melissa and Joey have proven to be a comedic powerhouse, with wonderful chemistry that has resonated with viewers in the tradition of great television pairings," said ABC Family president Michael Riley, "As our focus on comedy continues to develop, we're delighted to see it return next year as an integral part of the network's expanding slate of original series."

ABC Family currently has Melissa & Joey sharing the 8:00 p.m. hour on Wednesday nights with new 30-minute comedy State of Georgia, which stars Raven Symone. I can date myself further with Cosby references to go with that comment, but instead I’ll simply say that these two relatively family-friendly thirty-minute comedies are paired nicely together and worth checking out if you’re in the mood for some light-and-funny summer TV.

Assistant Managing Editor

Kelly put her life-long love of movies, TV and books to greater use when she joined CinemaBlend as a freelance TV news writer in 2006, and went on to serve as the site’s TV Editor before joining the staff full-time in 2011 and moving over to other roles at the site. At present, she’s an Assistant Managing Editor who spends much of her time brainstorming and editing features, analyzing site data, working with writers and editors on content planning and the workflow, and (of course) continuing to obsess over the best movies and TV shows (those that already exist, and the many on the way). She graduated from SUNY Cortland with BA in Communication Studies and a minor in Cinema Studies. When she isn't working, she's probably thinking about work, or reading (or listening to a book), and making sure her cats are living their absolute best feline lives.
