America Ferrara Producing A Telenovela For MTV
Fans of America Ferrera are doubtlessly heartbroken that Ugly Betty is airing its last episode this week, leaving the 26-year-old jobless for the first time since the show started in 2006. But while the Betty glasses may be retired indefinitely, Ferrera won't be staying idle for long. MTV reports that she's teaming up with MTV and TV producer Ben Silverman to develop the interactive telenovela Pedro & Maria.
They're calling it the "first-ever multicultural, interactive series built for the digital age," which seems to mean that the episodes will be built both for television and the Internet, and that audiences will get to vote on which direction the soap opera-esque story goes.
Ferrera is only on board as an executive producer, but it seems more than likely that she'll make an appearance from time to time. As MTV exec David Janollari puts it, "The Latino population is an under-represented and under-served segment of the audience, and I am excited to help bring this relevant show to MTV." Translation: our primary audience is white people, and we're ready for that to change. I have no idea how popular Ferrera might be with the typical MTV audience, but she's a good person as any to have on board to start with.
