Awkward's lead character Jenna may seem a bit less awkward in the series' second season, but the show remains amusing, clever and charming in all the right ways. So it's definitely good news to learn that not only will the scripted half-hour dramedy be back for a third season, but we'll also have even more Awkwardness for Season 3 as MTV has given it a supersized order.
The Hollywood Reporter posted the news that MTV has given the Lauren Iungerich-created series a renewal order for Season 3. What's more, the third season will consist of 20 episodes, which is eight more than each of the first two seasons got.
MTV's been trying to get their scripted series off the ground, with mixed results. Things didn't work out so well for the network's attempt to Americanize Skins, but Teen Wolf and Awkward have done reasonably well. Like Awkward, the high school-set Teen Wolf will also be back for a jumbo-sized third season (24 episodes!). Both series are currently airing on MTV right now. While Teen Wolf approaches the challenges of adolescence with a supernatural twist and plenty of drama, Awkward keeps things grounded in reality, using humor to tackle the struggles of growing up, dating, sex and other pressures of high school.
I'm among the many who might gripe that MTV has lost its way with regards to its music focus, but I won't complain about Awkward's renewal. The series is smart and fun and showcases just the right amount of occasional goofiness to offset the otherwise angsty world of Jenna and her fellow high schoolers (and parents and guidance counselor). Awkward is one of the reasons I watch MTV these days. (Teen Wolf is the other). Awkward is currently in its second season, which airs Thursday nights at 10:30 p.m. on MTV.
