Big Love Creators Developing China Doll For HBO
Big Love’s absence certainly leaves a vacancy at HBO which can be filled by another unconventional family, and that may come in the form of a family drama by the Big Love creators called China Doll. The project, which is being written by Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer is in development for the pay-cable channel.
Deadline posted the news, stating that China Doll, which is being penned by Big Love‘s Olsen and Scheffer, combines Scheffer’s love of technology with Olsen’s interest in Chinese history and politics. While their series Big Love followed a family of polygamists, China Doll will center on a mixed-race family and their humanoid robot. The husband is a California construction subcontractor, and his wife is an Asian-American college professor.
If, like me, you just had a flashback to Small Wonder, rest assured, this series sounds like it’ll be less about the shenanigans of an adorable girl-robot who only ever wears the same dress and more about the collision of culture and technology. Olsen describes it by saying, “It is about China, Chinese Americans, robots, the effect of technology on our lives and the China moment in American consciousness.”
Scheffer went on to specify that China Doll is now a sci-fi series. He describes it as “ambitious but set in the present day.”
Whatever it is, it sounds different and interesting.
