The DirectTv/NBC drama will get a little competition when AMC gets in on the gridiron with a new show from the director of the Oscar-nominated The Blind Side. The Hollywood Reporter has it that John Lee Hancock is close to a deal that would land his new show The Wreck on AMC.
The Wreck follows a high school football coach as he’s given an ultimatum: win or you’re fired. In the world of Southern high school football, this directive isn’t anywhere near far-fetched, as coaches are frequently put in high pressure situations where winning is the only option.
AMC has quietly become a major player with the hour long drama series. With their recent track record of putting together critically acclaimed shows like Breaking Bad and Mad Men, there’s good reason to think The Wreck has a chance to be a quality program. That’s great news for Friday Night Light fans who’ll most likely see the last season of the show next year.
In addition to The Blind Side Hancock has The Rookie on his resume. Having two quality sports movies in the bag is another great sign for The Wreck, as making sports translate to the screen is never an easy thing. The Wreck could join new AMC shows Rubicon and The Walking Dead to make AMC a new television powerhouse. ,
