The Borgias Gets A New Season 3 Teaser, Fittingly Titled A New Pope

With the third season of The Borgias set to premiere in almost a month, added to news of the new Pope, the timing seems especially perfect for a new Borgias teaser. And what do you know? Showtime just so happened to have one ready to go today. It's unlikely that it's a coincidence that the new teaser is titled "A New Pope."

A New Pope would actually be a really great title for some kind of bizarre-funny Star Wars/Pope mash-up video. But that's a topic for another time, in a galaxy far, far away. In this case, "A New Pope" refers to Jeremy Irons' Rodrigo Borgia, a.k.a. Pope Alexander VI, the lead character in Showtime's period drama The Borgias. The series was renewed for a third season last spring, and at long last, it returns next month.

Created by Neil Jordan, The Borgias stars Jeremy Irons as the ambitious and corrupt Pope Alexander VI. The series follows the Pope, his son Cesare (Francois Arnaud) and daughter Lucrezia (Holliday Grainger), and focuses on the work, personal, religious and political matters Alexander must deal with, during an era where all of those things were tightly intertwined.

Showtime's teaser's amusing "man of the people" comment seems like it might be a direct nod to what's already been said about the newly appointed Pope Francis I. Either way, it's a well timed bit of advertising for the premium cable drama, that's for sure.

The Borgias Season 3 premieres April 14 on Showtime.
