For those of us who are waiting with bated breath for Lost’s new season and the answers that will (hopefully) come with it, the latest bit of casting news from the series is pretty exciting. According to Zap2It, Fisher Stevens is joining the cast of Lost. Stevens, who has guest-starred on sitcoms such as Frasier and Friends, is reportedly playing a character named Minkowski. More importantly, he was the guy on the other end of the satellite phone with whom Jack spoke in the season finale.

While we’ve already learned about some of

Minkowski, however, relates back to some of last season’s biggest mysteries. He’s affiliated with Naomi, the Brazilian who crash landed on the island and lied to the Losties about being sent to rescue the survivors of Oceanic flight 815. She claimed to have been sent by Desmond’s love, Penny, but as Charlie found out right before he died, Penny had never heard of her. Speaking of Desmond, Minkowski the character shares a name with Minkowski the German physicist who theorized that time exists as a fourth dimension. Could this relate to the question of whether or not our favorite Scottish brothah is actually a time-traveler?

Since this is Lost, it’s unlikely that Minkowski and Naomi just happen to be another search and rescue party trying to save Jack and the gang, so the question remains, who are they? And what do they want? It was clear from the flash-forward that at least some of the castaways made it off of the island, so there does appear to be some sort of rescue involved—but is it an evil rescue? It looks like we’ll just have to wait a few more months until we get answers. But that shouldn’t be much of a problem, as Lost fans are nothing if not patient.

Lost’s 4th Season is set to premiere on ABC in February.
