The YouTube sensation “Epic Rap Battles” has taken on a life of its own and now they have tackled two of the biggest “busters” in the biz. I am of course talking about the world famous Ghostbusters versus the Discovery Channel’s head nerds The Mythbusters.So who would win in an all out, hip-hop infused rap war targeted at both the scientific and paranormal crowds? It is a tight match up but the clear winner is definitely….the Ghostbusters!
Celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, the fearsome foursome from Ivan Reitman’s worldwide hit bring their A-game against the Mythbusters who have already been on the air since 2003. Who knew that the shenanigans of Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage would last over 250 episodes and develop a cult following of their own? However when you are going up against comedy icons like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, it is a tall order to be thrown in a verbal smack down even if it is in a fictional rap battle.
The production of the video as per most of the Epic Rap Battles, is top notch and continues to get better as the series gets more popular. The actors that play the Ghostbusters & Mythbusters seriously look like our protagonists, some more than others but still impressive. Zach Sherwin as Egon Spengler is a scarily accurate Harold Ramis and it is as if the recently passed writer/director has risen as a spectre. Conversely, Mythbuster Jamie Hyneman as played by “Nice Peter” will have you doing a double take to make sure that it is not actually the real scientist.
Spewing lyrics like "Are you tired of two geeks in mustaches who can manage to be boring with explosions and crashes? If you or the Lorax wanna bust like we do give us a call, we're ready to defeat you." it is hard for the Mythbusters to get a foothold in this epic fest of rhyming. The Discovery Channel duo try to come back with lines like, "Your science is preposterous, the opposite of competent process, and in this episode we'll give you a synopsis starting with the vacuum cleaners strapped on your back, it's a fact positrons don't react like that." However it is just comes off as slightly amateurish and makes you realize that the Ghostbusters brand is so globally lovable as compared to The Mythbusters. And hey, anytime you can see the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man get jiggy with it and begin to boogie down on an 80’s split screen, it's a bonus.
Overall this is not much of an Epic Rap Battle but rather a trouncing by the boys with the Neutrino Wands and nuclear backpacks. Although the Mythbusters could probably disprove much of the Ghostbusters film, Venkman and company kill it in this round of the ongoing YouTube series. There is no doubt that the production team behind the ERB’s are talented; anyone that can find a rhyme for “Winston Zeddemore” deserves street cred.
