Ladies and gentlemen, the Descendants! Whose descendants are we looking at in the photo above? These four colorfully dressed teens are the offspring of some of Disney's most iconic villains, and they're among the lead characters of Disney Channel's planned musical adventure comedy TV movie Descendants, which is expected to air next year (2015).
EW shared the photo above, which shows us Descendants stars Dove Cameron, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson and Cameron Boyce, playing Maleficent's daughter Mal, Jafar's son Jay, the Evil Queen's daughter Evvie and Cruella De Vil's son Carlos respectively. How will these four fit in among the kids at the kingdom's prep school? That's the story this TV musical-comedy adventure story will explore.
As we learned last year, Descendants is set in the present day idyllic kingdom where happily-ever-afters are playing out. The benevolent teen son of Beast and Belle -- aka the King and Queen of the kingdom -- prepares to take the throne and uses his first proclamation to announce an invitation for redemption to the exiled offspring of the mentioned villains. Enter Carlos, Mal, Evvie and Jay, four kids with big-bad parents, who are now entering the kingdom for the first time to attend prep school with the good people of the kingdom.
Will these Descendants use their shot at "redemption" to build a better reputation for themselves? Or will they follow in the footsteps of their evil parents? It seems almost unfair to think that these kids need to redeem themselves, consider it's their parents who earned the evil status, right? Or maybe their kids have bad reputations of their own. Disney Channel's official description does describe them as trouble-making.
And speaking of "Descendants," the title is vague enough that we should keep in mind that there are offspring of some of Disney's heroes being featured in this story as well, including the kids of Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. Hopefully we'll get a peek at them soon. In the meantime, based on the above photo, though The Descendants is a live-action story, the colorful attire of the characters featured suggests a visual nod to the animated films to which these characters are linked. The story is said to be modern-day, but they're definitely not dressed like regular kids, so we might expect more of a fairytale-themed setting for this movie.
In addition to the above pictured stars, Descendants also stars Kristin Chenoweth (playing Maleficent), Kathy Najimy (playing the Evil Queen), Maz Jobrani (playing Jafar), and Wendy Raquel Robinson (playing Cruella de Vil). Now that this first image has released, hopefully it's an indication that we'll see more glimpses of the characters for this upcoming TV movie in the near future.
