The Event Watch: A Matter of Life and Death
Columbus Day can't stop The Event. Let's begin--divided, as usual, into the two opposing plots:
Plot A: Aliens, Planes, and Presidents, Oh My:
We get a string of interviews in which the passengers describe their experience. While they appeared dead, some of their biological functions kept right on going, making them, in Princess Bride terminology, "mostly dead." Martinez muses that the whole kill-and-bring-back thing is a display of power. Meanwhile, Sterling interrogates Michael. He gives up the name "Vicky."
Martinez kibbitzes with his wife, clearly pointing out that this little Lazarus trick isn't a miracle, just science they don't yet understand. The leader of the shadowy conspiracy calls Martinez and demands the release of Sophia, with the consequence of more deaths if his demands aren't met. Martinez and Sterling confer, and Sterling points out that the opposition is powerful, but if they were really ALL-POWERFUL, they could've freed Sophia and friends already.
Flashback to twelve months before, and The First Lady readies her husband for dinner with Sophia...who is, interestingly, vegan. Martinez reveals that he and his wife met via their moms, who were both Cuban immigrants. We see Sophia again manipulate the conversation expertly, as she says she hopes her people will be welcome to America in the same way. Back in the now, Martinez grills Sophia for answers, and knows that she ordered William's death last episode. She finally relents, and reveals that the man on the phone was Thomas, the leader of the free contingent of her people who doesn't have a lot of love for humanity. She pleads with Martinez to give in to his demands.
Back at the passengers' holding area, all of the flight survivors develop simultaneous nosebleeds. Medical teams rush to them as they all start coughing up blood...and MORE ON THIS NEXT WEEK!
Plot B: Sean, Leila, and the Enigma Named Vicky:

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News
Sean and his newfound ally Collier flee the scene of the US Marshalls' shootout, as Vicky's mysterious superiors advise her to move Leila before Sean's super-sleuthing skills bring him to her doorstep. Flashback to five years earlier, as Sean picks up a rain-soaked Leila and drives her home for Thanksgiving dinner. Back in the present, Vicky and a friend drag Leila into yet another craphole cell/basement. Curiously, above said basement is an actual living space for Vicky and her kidnapping pal. Leila's ears perk up when she hears that they're planning to kill her in the next two hours or so.
Meanwhile, Sean hacks into the FBI database through an unsecured Wi-Fi network (uh...). He tries to ferret out Vicky's various identities via bank accounts in their names. He finds that she's just paid her rent on a place in Texas. Flashback to Thanksgiving, five years ago, and we see Sean and Michael meet for the first time. Sean seems to be saying all the right things, but gets closed-mouth about his own family--because he hasn't spoken to them in a while, due to his parent's split when he was a kid.
Back in craphole basement, Leila fights to escape. Vicky's given the go-ahead to kill Leila...just as Sean and Collier arrive at the Texas location. Sean knocks on the door...and a much older woman who is NOT Vicky answers. Curious. Sean and Collier chat her up, and she reveals she's being paid to live there. Sean attempts to scam her into thinking he's an FBI agent (good luck with that one...), but Collier basically plays the "Hi, I'm ACTUALLY an FBI agent" card on him. Sean slinks around the place and discovers a boy named Adam hiding in the back of the apartment. Adam wants to know if Sean's a friend of his mommy's...who happens to be Vicky (gasp!). A little prodding reveals that the older woman is Vicky's mother, who doesn't know where she is. She does, however, have an emergency contact for her.
We return to Leila's cell, where she's trying to talk Vicky out of killing her. Vicky says she's just following orders and puts a gun to Leila's head. Surprise! Leila's out of her bonds, and beats Vicky silly before nabbing the gun and scampering off. Vicky chases her, and Leila, in a moment of quick thinking, shoots Vicky. Well, glad that's over with. Leila keeps running and hits a main street, where she finds a cop who scoops her up in his cruiser. From the station, Leila calls Sean and begs him to come and get her. Back at Thanksgiving five years prior, Sean and Michael share some scotch, and Michael officially welcomes Sean into the family. Finally, at the police station, the cop goes to get Leila some water and DUN DUN DUN! reports to Vicky. The whole thing's been a scam--Leila's been set up as bait to nab Sean. Her mysterious boss (Thomas? From Plot A?!) gives her further instructions...and we're done for this week.
All in all, I'm seriously enjoying this show. It makes me really miss the patience and juicy speculation of LOST, though. We're getting answers, and that's great...but I miss the mystery. Does that make sense? I suppose the grass is always greener...
