The Following Season 2 Teaser Exchanges Poe Masks For Even Creepier Ones

Creepy and dramatic was kind of a theme during the first season of Fox’s The Following, and judging by the teasers for the upcoming second season of Kevin Williamson’s serial killer thriller, it’s one that will carry over to Season 2. Another theme in Season 1 were the creepy Edgar Allan Poe masks that Joe Carroll’s followers wore when they were carrying out some of their most heinous misdeeds. That mask can be seen in the above video, but the teaser suggests that Joe’s followers may be taking a more direct approach to celebrating their leader. Or former leader.

Spoilers if you aren’t caught up on The Following through Season 1!

When Season 1 ended, James Purefoy’s killer and cult-leader character Joe Carroll was presumed dead. Whether or not that proves to be the case remains to be seen. I don’t think many of us will be all that surprised if it turns out he isn’t though. The character certainly has enough allies to aid him in faking his own death and finding shelter while he regroups, if that was his plan all along. But even if he is dead, that doesn’t mean his followers have abandoned him or his message. The above teaser, which comes from Yahoo, shows off the vulnerable expressions of Joe’s young and pretty followers as they prepare masks made in his likeness and put them on, clearly ready for whatever’s next.

The teaser follows the ”Exist” promo, which takes a slightly different approach to reminding us that the series is returning, but also focuses on Joe Carroll. In this one, Kevin Bacon’s Ryan Hardy ponders the wise (Usual Suspects inspired?) quote, “The greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world he did not exist.”

That one is more of a hint that Carroll may not be nearly as gone as people would like to think.

Fox has The Following set to return for Season 2 in January 2014.

Heading into its intense, spellbinding second season, hit psychological thriller THE FOLLOWING will catch up with RYAN HARDY (Golden Globe Award winner and Emmy Award nominee Kevin Bacon) in the wake of a horrific new murder spree. The FBI calls on Ryan and MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore) to speak with the lone survivor, LILY (Connie Nielsen, “Boss,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”), in order to help them solve the case. Ryan is reluctant to re-engage with the FBI, but finds a valuable ally in his niece, MAX (Jessica Stroup, “90210”), an NYPD cop working in the Intel Division. As the investigation proceeds, Ryan crosses paths with several complicated individuals, including LUKE (Sam Underwood, “Dexter”) and MANDY LANG (Tiffany Boone, “Beautiful Creatures”), which furthers his suspicion that JOE CARROLL's (James Purefoy) reign of terror is far from over.
