Fox Orders More Mobbed

Last night Fox aired a one-hour special called Mobbed, which combined a flash-mob performance with a marriage proposal. If you watched and enjoyed it, there’s good news. The network announced today that they’re giving Mobbed and eight-episode order.

Judging from the comments and reviews posted online, it seems most people either loved or hated Mobbed, with few falling somewhere in between. The special, was hosted and exec-produced by Howie Mandel and followed the planning of one man’s marriage proposal, which included a flash-mob dance performance as a lead-up to the big question. We were shown some of the idea-planning, rehearsals with choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon, and eventually the final product, including the bride-to-be’s very emotional reaction to everything. As I’m a sucker for big surprises and climactic dance numbers, I make no apologies for enjoying it or for weeping like a baby the moment the recipient of the production started to cry.

According to Fox’s announcement, Mobbed was “the most-watched unscripted telecast to follow an AMERICAN IDOL episode in over two years in Total Viewers and outperformed FOX’s prior season average so far in the Thursday 9:00 PM hour by +36% among Adults 18-49.”

“MOBBED exceeded our expectations in every way last night,” said Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “The show clearly connected with viewers, and we look forward to working with Howie and his team as they travel across the country to capture more of the shocking surprises, grand-scale performances and extraordinarily heartfelt moments featured in the first episode.”

There’s certainly a lot of potential for this series. While I expect we’ll see at least one pregnancy announcement, I’d love it if they got really creative with the kinds of reveals featured.
