While $#*! My Dad Says may be gone, creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick remain teamed up and are moving on to work on not one but two other pilots for two separate networks. The duo, also known for creating Will & Grace, have secured two put pilot commitments, one of which is on CBS and the other for ABC.
Kohan and Mutchnick’s close friendship has likely allowed them to have an easier time of working together. The two have teamed up for $#*! My Dad Says as well as Will & Grace. Now it appears that their relationship will not only be affecting their work, but it will also be inspiring it. According to Deadline, the writers are working on a comedy series based on their own relationship. The pilot, which has been a long time coming, with two previous attempts having been made, follows two best friends, one of which is straight and the other is gay. Both are in serious relationships, which explains the show’s description about “4 people in 3 relationships.”
Kohan and Mutchnick tried to build a pilot around the concept in 2007 for CBS, with Jay Mohr and Brian Austin Green as the leads. A second attempt was made for ABC in 2008 with Alan Tudyk, Josh Cooke and Ty Burrell as the leads. Both Burell and Tudyk can now be found on ABC in different shows (Modern Family and the upcoming Suburgagory). And Josh Cooke was among the stars of ABC’s shortlived Better With You. Due to a variety of factors, Mutchnick and Kohan’s previous attempts at a comedy about their friendship didn’t work out. Third time’s a charm though, as CBS has a pilot agreement set for the concept.
Mutchnick and Kohan are also working with ABC, this time for a pilot called Help, which is described as an Upstairs, Downstairs-style comedy, which follows a wealthy family and their staff of employees, among which is a young personal chef, on whom the pilot will center. We’ll have to wait and see if either shows work out and go to series.
