Helix Gets Its First Official Trailer... And It's Creepy

We’re about two months away from the premiere of Syfy’s new original series Helix, and this week Syfy has given us the drama’s first official trailer. If you thought the teaser with the oozing ear was creepy, brace yourself for the above video, which plays as much like a horror as it does a sci-fi thriller.
As the trailer indicates, the series centers on a group of CDC scientists who head to the Arctic to investigate a potential disease outbreak. As we see in the video, it looks like something black and oozy is sneaking out of that body bag while the scientists are doing their investigation. It’s presumably the same stuff we saw in the mentioned teaser, and given the snippets of footage that flash through the trailer, it looks like that black stuff is here to stay and may be a visible sign of this spreading disease — or whatever it is. The words “We’re not just breaking international laws, we’re screwing with the laws of nature” hints that there may be layers of story here, and hopefully it all comes together well.
Helix stars Billy Campbell as Dr. Alan Farragut and Hiroyuki Sanada as Dr. Hiroshi Hitaki. The former is leading the team to the facility and the latter owns the facility. Also among the cast are Kyra Zagorsky, Mark Ghanime, Jordan Hayes, Meegwun Fairbrother, Catherine Lemieux and Neil Napier. The series is executive produced by Battlestar Galactica’s Ronald D. Moore, whom you can see discussing the plot of the series in the video below.
I got to visit the set of Helix last month, and while I didn’t get to speak with Moore about the show, the cast and co-executive producer Cameron Porsandeh were there to talk about the series. See what they had to say and check out the photos over at Cinema Blend’s sci-fi-loving sister site Giant Freakin Robot. That includes this photo, which shows a body bag that may very well be the same one we saw in the trailer. If any black ooze came slithering out of it when I was there, I missed it. I was probably too distracted by the skeleton…
Helix premieres Friday, January 10 at 10/9c on Syfy.
