History's Hatfields & McCoys Tried To Keep The Set Green

The blood feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys is noted for its violent nature as well as its incredible story. On Monday, May 28, Part 1 of the upcoming original scripted miniseries based on the feud will air on History, with two additional episodes airing on subsequent evenings. With Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton heading off both sides of the feud in the drama, the show looks like it will be full of bloodshed, hardship, and revenge. The families might not be worried about sparing lives, but as it turns out the producers were worried about sparing something else: the Earth.

To save money, the miniseries was shot in Romania, but executive producer Leslie Greif also went out of his way to avoid destructing the landscape by keeping the set pretty green. The Walker, Texas Ranger creator has won two Environmental Media Awards in the past, so I guess this shouldn’t be a surprise. What may be a bit of a surprise are the lengths the crew went to recycle, reduce, and reuse. The executive producer recently spoke with Mother Nature Network about the strategies the production used.

“It was important to me to keep a green set as much as we could. That included when building scenes, we would take materials, deconstruct the sets and then rebuild the set, repurposing the same materials. We also set our offices up for recycling and even went as far to go through all our leftover food, sort it, and give anything away that we could, we tried not to let anything go to waste."

I’m not sure if that first part was more of a green initiative than a way to keep production costs down. Kevin Costner, after all, recently spoke to Vulture about the lack of “perks” on the set. However, if an initiative serves a dual purpose that seems like a pretty successful venture to me.

You can catch the Hatfields & McCoys on History beginning on Memorial Day at 9 p.m. ET.
