Housewives Producer Sparks On-Set Drama

In its first season, Desperate Housewives was the toast of Hollywood. It’s been all downhill from there.

Desperate Housewives is no longer the talk of the water cooler, and the prime time soap’s ratings have sagged. Critics have soured on the show too, and it’s been bashed for being creatively bankrupt. But weaker ratings and bad reviews aren’t the only problem for ABC. According to The Hollywood Reporter the show’s top producer has just walked off the job.

Tom Spezialy was the show’s executive producer and showrunnner, the top dog in charge of their day-to-day operation. On Friday, he surprised everyone by quitting, leaving a stunned cast and crew behind him. With only a few days of production left on the show’s second season, it’s not a good time for a replacement.

ABC has since lured him back on a temporary basis, and he’ll return to finish out the rest of season two’s production. But odds are he won’t hang around for season three, expect Housewives to find a replacement. In fact, they may be finding a lot of replacements. Some think his departure is just the first in an impending massive shakeup of the show’s creative team in an effort to recapture whatever it was that made people like it in the first place.
