Jennifer Hudson To Guest Star In Smash For Season 2

For many contestants on American Idol, the Fox singing competition is the pinnacle of their singing career and the most exposure they'll probably get as musicians. For a smaller percentage, the series is just the start of a much bigger career filled with accomplishments. Jennifer Hudson is among the latter camp, as evidenced by her Academy Award. The singer/actor/Weight Watchers spokesperson's star only continues to rise, and now it looks like NBC's Smash will benefit from her talents.

NBC's musical drama Smash is already set for some notable changes, with a new show runner, some character exits and character additions. And apparently, at least one amazing guest appearance. TV Line shared the news tonight that Hudson is set to join the Broadway-focused series for Season 2 in a multi-episode arc. According to the site, she'll play Veronica, "a Tony-winning Broadway star who impacts the lives of Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty)."

That's an interesting description and one that's just vague enough to leave plenty of room for speculation. Will she be some form of competition to Karen and Ivy? Or is she going to come into the show in some sort of mentor-type role. With a Tony under her belt and Jennifer Hudson's pipes, Veronica sounds like someone Karen and Ivy might strive to be like. Or they'll be threatened by her. Again, we can only guess. What's certain is that this is great news for Smash. Hopefully they give her something great to sing.

At present, she’s an Assistant Managing Editor who spends much of her time brainstorming and editing features, analyzing site data, working with writers and editors on content planning and the workflow, and (of course) continuing to obsess over the best movies and TV shows (those that already exist, and the many on the way).
