MTV Orders Comedy Pilot About Post-College Reality
MTV’s made a name for itself for its (oftentimes successful) attempts to connect with American youth on some level or another, which is why the news that they’ve ordered a pilot for a single-camera comedy about a bunch of twenty-somethings isn’t all that surprising.
According to Deadline, MTV has ordered a comedy pilot written by Dirty Sexy Money’s Craig Wright, about a group of young adults, fresh out of college and about to learn that a degree isn’t an automatic ticket to success. Set to star in the pilot are Jared Kusnitz, Michelle Ang, Sarah Habel, Inbar Lavi and Diego Boneta.
"It is a comedy about the millenial generation's experience entering young adult life and the workforce in today's economic climate," MTV's head of programming David Janollari said. "It's about post-college reality versus the amplified expectations... exploring all the firsts from love, family, friends and career in today's post-Gen X world."
We’ve seen similar stories told in films like Reality Bites or more recently, Post Grad, where young, overachieving barely-adults come to learn the challenges of finding a job in their field (or even anywhere near their field) after graduation. Is it too much to hope that, should this show get picked up for a series, it will not only turn out to be funny but also relatable and somewhat realistic to what it’s really like for young people entering the workforce and adulthood? I may be jaded by too many episodes of Jersey Shore and the occasional glimpse at what's become of The Real World but I have some hope that MTV and Craig Wright will get it right with this scripted series.
