Marvel Studios Thinking About An Agent Carter Series

After building the biggest current film franchise in the world with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios is now getting set to make its television debut with the new series Agent's Of S.H.I.E.L.D. But those aren't the only plans that they have. With less than a week to go before the release of their first series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the studio is already getting a second show prepared that will center on Peggy Carter, the character played by Hayley Atwell in both Captain America: The First Avenger and the soon to be released short film Agent Carter.

In its report the trade stresses that "there are no deals currently in place" and that the project is still in the early stages. At this point it's unclear if Atwell would return to play the lead role on the series, and both Marvel and ABC - the network owned by Disney that will be airing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - declined to comment on the story. At this time it sounds like an Agent Carter series is just an idea that's being tossed around. But it has been proven that Marvel Studios is interested in doing more with the Peggy Carter character.

Later this month, fans who purchase Iron Man 3 on Blu-ray will get the aforementioned Agent Carter short as a bonus feature. Set one year after the events of the first Captain America movie (meaning still back in the 1940s), the mini-movie follows the titular hero as she takes on a secret mission. Bradley Whitford and Dominic Cooper co-star, and you can watch a preview of the short below:

As an admittedly big fan of what the folks over at Marvel Studios are doing, I would love to see an Agent Carter series. The show could be a Mad Men-esque period piece show about the origins of the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, which would make it fantastic to watch parallel to Agent's Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Perhaps a few years down the line they will introduce the Agent Carter series with a special kind of time travel crossover episode that would introduce the cast of the new show (much like what CSI did before CSI: Miami became a thing).

While we will probably have to wait a long time to see if Agent Carter actually becomes a reality, comic book fans will be able to get their first look at Marvel's Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D. when its pilot airs on September 24th at 8:00pm EST on ABC, and Hayley Atwell will be back in character next year in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
