While multi-camera sitcoms are the exception to the single camera rule on most networks, CBS has rarely swayed from this tried and true format, and their comedies stay on the air seemingly forever. They’ve added two more to their development slate, and both come from The Millers creator Greg Garcia and his production company Amigos de Garcia, run through CBS Television Studios. Maybe they’ll change their name to GGBS if these projects turn into series.
The network granted a script commitment to an untitled comedy that Garcia will be executive producing with former How I Met Your Mother writer Chris Harris, who will pen the script. The plot revolves around a couple trying to romantically set up two of their friends that they suspect will be perfect for each other. Sounds like a fine enough idea for a pilot, but they would need to stretch that concept pretty thin to wrap it around a whole season. Harris was a writer on Late Show with David Letterman for years and also created last year’s shortlived but enjoyable Fox comedy The Goodwin Games. I’m definitely willing to give this a shot.
With even less details attached comes another untitled sitcom, this one set in the workplace, according to THR. It will be penned by Bobby Bowman, who has been working with Garcia for years. Starting as a writer during Family Guy’s pre-cancellation years, Bowman joined the Garcia Train first on Yes Dear, and he then moved on to My Name is Earl, Raising Hope and The Millers. While there are faults with each of those, they each have their great points. Sometimes I hear Earl Hickey narrating the events of my own life.
These aren’t the only shows that Amigos de Garcia has in the pipes for the upcoming development season. Garcia and partner Alix Jaffe are also working with Blue Mountain State creator Eric Falconer on an autobiographical comedy inspired by Falconer’s experiences while moving his family to L.A. That one’s being set up at ABC. Every network loves Garcia.
The Millers is gearing up for its sophomore season, and though it isn’t the most critically acclaimed series on CBS’s schedule – and what is? – the show is quite popular. It regularly pulled in well over ten million viewers per episode, at least earlier in the season. Check out a clip below, which features Will Arnett and Margo Martindale in a conga line, because then your day will be complete.
