Political Animals Preview: A Look At The Cast Of USA's Upcoming Political Drama

Among the summer offerings on television this July is the start of USA's promising-looking six-part limited series Political Animals. From producers Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark, the series stars Sigourney Weaver as a former first lady (and current Secretary of State) who just might have her sights set on getting back into the White House. That topic is among the those discussed in the latest promo USA has released for the series.

Every trailer and teaser I see for Political Animals has me more and more convinced that Sigourney Weaver is going to be fantastic in this series. Then again, as a Weaver fan, I might say that about just about anything she's in. The lead actor isn't the only thing Political Animals has going for it, though. The cast as a whole is pretty fantastic, with Carla Gugino, Ellen Burstyn, Ciaran Hinds, James Wolk, Sebastian Stan and Brittany Ishibashi set to start. Gugino stands out in the trailer below, playing the role of journalist Susan Berg, a woman who seems to have it out for Weaver's Elaine Barrish Hammond.

For a six-episode series, it certainly looks like a lot of subjects are being covered here, including Gugino's character's ambition and determination to get the goods on Hammond. I love the icy exchange between the two women about Hammond's husband's affair, which has Hammond noting the fact that Berg hasn't exactly won any Pulizters since she turned her professional attention to that aspect of her life.

We also get a look at the kinds of pressures are put on Hammonds' sons and how that might affect Hammond's political aspirations. There are just so many things about this new series that look interesting and potentially grittier than what we usually see from USA's dramas.

Political Animals premieres July 15 at 10/9c on USA.
